We were intrigued reading in
the Jerusalem Post about the
three-day cross-oountry walk in
Israel which is now a national
institution. The writer, Abraham
Rabinowich, noted that the num
ber of walkers increases every
year. This year close to 9,000
made the three-day hike. Old
people, young people, Jews, Gen
tiles. It’s evidently a sight to see!
“The boys,” he writes “are dis
ciplined, superbly conditioned
and good humored. The girls are
pretty as buttons.” A group of
Japanese behind the Japanese
flag walked along singing the He
brew song, “Jerusalem of Gold.”
The 101-year-old Mordecai
Goron, a veteran of previous
walks, did not appear this time.
Last year, he was quoted as say
ing that he attributed his long
evity to taking a shot or two of
brandy every day. We hope his
supply of brandy has not run
out.
We recall the stir when the
late President Kennedy took a
rocking chair into the White
House. There are a lot of good
old fashionied things. Old fash
ioned manners might bear a re
vival—and old fashioned Jewish
cholent as well. Israel has shown
that it has expertise in reviving
old things. She has revived ever
so many old things, the old city
of Ashdod, the old city of Arad,
the old Hebrew language. Want
anything old revived? Just look
in the Red Book and call Israel’s
number. If Israel should suc.^ed
in reviving the old fashioned art
of walking, it will be a supreme
boon to humanity.
The days of walking were the
days of America’s greatness,—-
Abraham Lincoln walked 30 miles
to get a book. Today most peo
ple won’t walk 30 miles for a
whole library. If Paul Revere
were alive today and was going
to warn Americans against the
British, they would say, “Paul,
grab a taxi.”
Benjamin Franklin, who figur
ed out everything scientifically,
believed strongly in walking.
When it rained, he walked in
doors three miles. According to
Ben, walking is the one tiling in
which it pays not to be on the
level. If you walk one mile up
hill, it is more exercise than
