USY Rally Accuses Soviets
Of Spiritually Enslaving Jews
NEW YORK (WUP)—The So
viet Union was accused of being
the leading exponent of anti-
Semitism and with carrying out
“a policy of massive cultjral
persecution and spiritual slavery”
against its three million Jewish
citizens.
These charges were outlined at
a protest study in connection
with the observance of the fes
tival of Shavuot in a unique
ceremony held at the Dag Ram-
marskjold Plaza near the UN.
Some 400 members of the
United Synagogue Youth con
ducted the traditional night of
study associated with the holiday
commemorating the anniversary
of the giving of the 10 Command
ments. The program was arranged
in cooperation with the American
Conference on Soviet Jewry,
ad-hoc body representing the
major religious, secular and civic
Jewish organizations in the U. S.
, Rabbi Saul I. Teplitz, Wood-
mere, N. Y., vice chairman of the
American Jewish Conference,
termed the Soviet Union “the
leading perpetrator of anti-Sem
itism in the world today.” He
specifically cited the USSR’s “vi
triolic anti-Zionist and anti-Is
rael propaganda which feeds the
prejudices of the anti-Semite —
both within the Soviet Union and
throughout the world.”
Another speaker, the renowned
Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel,
noted that “Soviet Russia’s treat-

ment of her Jewish citizens rep
resents the outstanding example
of massive^rcultural persecution
today, ofspiritual slavery. The
most cruel act imaginable,” he
stressed, “is to drive a people to
commit suicide. The present Rus
sian policy in seeking to deprive
the Jewish people of their religi
ous and cultural identity has
precisely such a goal: to impose
upon the Jewish citizens the pro
cess of self-liquidation.”
Rabbi Heschel predicted that
the three million Jews in the
USSR “will not be blackmailed
into committing suicide.”
The dramatic meeting called
for the immediate release of two
young Soviet Jews recently ar
rested. One, Boris L. Kochubiy-
evsky, of Kiev, was arrested in
December, 1968, after communi
cating with Chairman Brezhev
that he wanted his children to
receive a Jewish education and
to lead a Jewish life. Another
young man, a mathematics stu
dent, Ilya Ripps, set himself on
fire at the foot of the Monument
of Liberty in Riga on April 13,
1969. He was subsequently ar
rested.
The rally'was concluded with
the study of the Talmud with
the United Synagogue Youth Di-
jgetor and with Rabbi Wolf Kell-
man, executive director of the
Rabbinical Assembly and Dr. Si
mon Greenberg of the Jewish
Theological Seminary.
A moving introduction to the
protest meeting occurred when
seventeen-year-old Jane Snyder
of New Hyde Park enthralled the
huge gathering with an original
redemptive prose she had written
for the occasion which included,
among other verses, the passage
“All Israel is responsible one to
another” (Kol Yisroel Arevim
Zeh Bazeh!)

Klopss
Klopss is t h e Jewish version
of a meat loaf. It is made out
of chopped meat and flavored
with onions and garlic. It is
moist and tender and its juices
are wonderful on rice or mashed
potatoes. You can decorate the
klopss cross-wise, it will feature
slices of egg in the center. Klopss
is delicious when served hot or
cold, which makes it doubly at
tractive.
2 pounds lean hamburger meat
1 cup bread crumbs
2 eggs
1 medium onion—finely chopped
2 cloves garlic
2 tbls. oil
2 hard boiled eggs
1 cup beef bouillon
2 tsp. salt, Yi tsp. pepper
1. Combine in a bowl the ham
burger meat, salt, pepper,
chopped onion and mashed gar
lic. Add beaten eggs, oil and
bread crumbs.
2. Mix well to have a unified
mixture. Form two big patties.
In each put a hard boiled egg.
Shape the patties with your
hands so the eggs are in the mid
dle, covered with meat all over.
3. Put the 2 klopsses in a shal
low pan. Surround with the
beef bouillon (which can be
canned or made out of a cube).
Cover the pan and put in a med
