Abrams Is Named Chairman for Greenville
Campaign To Strengthen Israel’s Economy
Irving Abrams, promi n e n t
Greenville civic and communal
leader, has been named chairman
of the 1969 campaign,for State
of Israel Bonds, it was announced
this week by the offices of the
Greenville Committee for State
of Israel Bonds.
Serving as his co-chairmen
are two prominent Greenville
businessmen also active in civic
and communal affairs, Hy Cham
bers and Larry Nachman.
Special emphasis will be placed
on this year’s Israel Bond^cam-
paign as the major source of in
vestment funds to maintain the
pace of Israel’s development and
strengthen its economy at a time
when an unprecedented propor
tion of the country’s fiscal res
ources must be allocated to cope
with heightened tensions in the
area.
Mr. Abrams served with the
Army Air Force during World
War II. He graduated from Clem-
son University in 1948. He pres
ently serves as a member of the
Command and General Staff Col
lege in the Army Reserve as a
Major. He is a member of B’nai
B’rith 5th District Board of Gov
ernors. He is a member of the
Board of Directors of the Green
ville Civic Ballet, vice president
of the Temple of Israel, past pres
ident of the State of South Caro
lina Association of B’nai B’rith
Lodges, and presently .serves as
president of Raycord Company,
Inc.
Steve Gaynor, popular MGM
recording artist and humorist,
will highlight the entertainment

Herman Siegel
Herman Siegel of Cleveland,
O., a native of Savannah, died
May 22.
Funeral services were held
May 25 in Cleveland Heights.
Survivors include his daugh
ters, Mrs. Stanley Leeper of Tol
edo and Mrs. Sanford Baskin of
Cleveland; a sister, Mrs. Dave
Feinberg of Charleston; brothers,
Isadore M. Siegel of Atlanta and
Abram Siegel of Columbus, Ga.,
and seven grandchildren.
Mrs. Alex Davidoff
Mrs. Libbye Zion Davidoff of
Sandersville, Ga., died May 21.
Funeral services were held
May 22 in Atlanta with Rabbi
Harry H. Epstein and Cantor
Isaac Goodfriend officiating. In
terment was in Greenwood Cem
etery.
Survivors include her husband;
a daughter, Mrs. Donald Down
ing, Geneva, N. Y.; sisters, Mrs.
M. Freedman, Atlanta; Mrs. M.
Flacks, Baltimore; Mrs. M. Alper,
Chattanooga and two grandchil
dren.
Ruben H. Piha
Rubin H. Piha, 84, of Atlanta
died Friday, May 30.
Funeral services were held
June 1 with Rabbi Joseph Cohen
and Rabbi Robert Ichay officiat
ing. Interment was in Green
wood Cemetery.
Mr. Piha, who was retired, had
been the owner of Akins Park
Delicatessen in Atlanta for 34
years. He was one of the found
ing members of Or VeShalom
Congregation.
Survivors include his wife,
Luna Piha; daughters, Mrs. Vic
tor CCapelouto of Atlanta, Mrs.
Isaac Copelouto of Montgomery
and Mrs. Marvin Gould of Phil
adelphia: a son, Morris Piha of
Atlanta and several grandchil
dren and great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Hvman (Celia) Wolf, 69,
of Atlanta difed Tuesday, May
27.
Funeral services were held
May 28 with Rabbi Joseph Cohen
and Rabbi Robert .Ichay officiat
ing. Interment was in Greenwood
Cemetery.
Mrs. Wolf was a native of Rus
sia.
Survivors Included a daughter,
Mrs. Charlie Alhadeff of Atlanta
and a grandson, Jack Alhadeff,
also of Atlanta.

dinner would be in celebration of
Israel’s twenty-first year of
statehood.
A favorite of supper club audi
ences throughout the United
States and Canada, Steve Gay
nor has also been seen on num
erous television variety and
drama shows. He gained renown
as an actor at the Pittsburgh
Playhouse, has been master of
ceremonies at the New Arena
nightclub, and has performed at
the Civic Arena, all in Pitts
burgh. Among other entertain
ment locales in which he has ap
peared recently are Grossinger’s,
the Concord and the Nevele in
the Catskills of New York, the
Golden Slipper in Long Island,
the Latin Quarter in Cincinnati,
Town Casino and Chez Ami in
Buffalo, and the Elegante in
Brooklyn.

FRIENDSHIP NEWS

The curtain rang down on the
indoor season of the Senior
Friendship Club on Thursday,
May 29, with 13 members being
honored for having another
birthday.
Alma Gertner and Henriette
Tirk, financial secretaries, were
selected as the two individuals
doing the most toward the suc
cess and growth of the Senior
Friendship Club for the past
year and were presented to the
Sound of Honor 1969, for special
awards.
Joseph D. Hart. 64, husband of
Hilda B. Hart, died May 25. He
came to St. Petersburg 11 years
ago from Racine. Wis. He is also
survived by one daughter Miss
Gail Jean Pruss. of Cambridge,
Mass, and one brother Hyman
H. Hart, Chicago. Funeral Ser
vices were held on May 27, with
Rabbi Morris B. Chapman offici
ating.
Isadore White, who has been
hospitalized for months, made
his first public appearance on
May 29, when he attended the
Birthday Party at the Club with
his wife Jennie.
Morris Lerner has retired
from business and was registered
as a new member of the Club at
the last meeting.
Belle and Sam Mazear re
turned to St. Petersburg after
three months in which they
made a 4.000 mile mofor trip.
Senior Friendship Club opened
its outdoor season at Gulfport
Beach. Beach gatherings are.
scheduled for June 5, 9, 12, 16,
19. 23 and 26.
Arthur Sofsky, ”the oldest mem
ber in the SF Club, numbering
91 years, has changed his mind
about going to the Catskill
Mountains, and has decided to
stay in St. Petersburg.
Oscar and Carrie Ascher both
face surgery this summer. Oscar,
in conversation with this repor
ter. stated that he Ls going to let
Carrie undergo surgery first and
then be will undergo the experi
ence again, as he faces two sep-
erate operations.

comfortably at the Shore Acres
