Possible Plot To Assassinate
Ben-Gurion Believed Foiled
COPENHAGEN (JTA)—A Dan
ish court has ordered the deten
tion of two Arabs and a Swede
for three weeks pending an in
vestigation into a suspected plot
to assassinate former Israeli Pre
mier David Ben-Gurion in Rio de
Janeiro. The two Arabs have ap
pealed the decision. Mouna Sou-
di, 23, of Jordan, an Iraqi iden
tified only as Razak, 25, and Rolf
Anderson, 25, a Swede, all said
to be members of El Fatah, were
arrested in a hotel here as they
were about to leave to board a
plane to Rio that was scheduled
to land shortly before Mr. Ben-
Guripn’s^JaSFHPrjday. The Swede
had a hand grenade and a pistol.
The Danish high court hearing
was conducted in an atmosphere
of secrecy.
The three have denied a charge
of attempted murder and illegal
possession of the weapons.. Police
said the Arabs planned to arrive
at Rio’s Gallao International Air
port a few minutes before Ben-
Gurion's plane was to come in.
They planned to kill him then,
the officers said. Sources close to
Danish security police said pnos-
secution evidence included detail
ed instructions issued in the name
of El Fatah for shooting or
Jordan Cabinet
Change May Be
Moderate Move
LONDON (JTA) — King Hus
sein of Jordan asked Foreign
Minister Abdel Moneim Rifai to
form a new government recently
following the resignation of
Prime Minister Bah j at al-
Talhouni and his cabinet. The
reshuffling was seen by some
observers here as a move by the
King to establish a government
more amenable to a political
solution of the Middle East crisis.
Mr. Rifai was said to favor a
political solution, an approach
Mr. al-Talhouni reportedly op
posed. The former Prime Minister
was said to have been at odds
with the King for some time
over foreign policy and report
edly objected to a confrontation
between King Hussein’s troops
and Arab guerrillas in Amman
last November. The government
change came as the King pre
pared for a visit to Washington
April 8-9. Sources here said
Foreign Minister Rifai’s more
moderate views were well known
in Washington and at the United
Nations.
(There was no official evalua
tion in Jerusalem of the change
in Jordan’s government. One
source said, however, that the
replacement of Mr. al-Talhouni
with someone more moderate
might be a political maneuver
by King Hussein to prove his
good intentions on the eve of his
visit to Washington and to show
that he was still in control of
the country.) It has been known
in Israel for some time that King
Hussein planned to replace Mr.
al-Talhouni but when possible
successors were discussed it was
not Mr. Rifai but such pro-
Egyptian politicians as Suleiman
Nabulsi who were most frequent
ly mentioned. King Hussein was
known to have disagreed with
his Prime Minister on the issue
of aid to Palestinian guerrillas.

bombing Ben-Gurion shortly after
his landing. The instructions al
legedly included plans of the air
port. Police also produced suit
cases with false bottoms in which
were hidden three revolvers and
12 hand grenades.
According to police, air book
ings were to be arranged for the
Arab pair sq that they would land
at the Rio airport 10 minutes be
fore Ben-Gurion’s arrival. To do
this the Arabs had to oatch a
plane from Zurich. Security of
ficials say the Swede was in
structed to fly to Copenhagen to
receive and hide the couple and
then get him on an aircraft which
would connect with the Swiss
flight. Danish and Israeli agents
traced how the Swede made .the
bookings for the Arabs and took
them to their hotel. Danish se
curity police and Israeli author-
orities have asked Swedish soc-
urity police to investigate the
Swedish side of the case. Israel
has supplied the Danish security
police with a list of identified
members of El Fatah. The three
were arrested after a chamber
maid had seen their weapons.
In Jerusalem, Premier Golda
Meir expressed satisfaction that
the plot had not succeeded. She
made her statement at the begin
ning of Sunday’s cabinet meet
ing.
Mr. Ben-Gurion addressed a
gathering in Rio of over 2,000
school children, telling them to
study Hebrew and spend one year
or more in Israel. He met with
Guanabara state governor Negrao
de Lima and invited him to visit
Kibbutz Sde Boker.
