THC SOUTHERN ISRAELITE
Pag# Savaa
ISRAEL RAMBLE&|
looks like Israel will again be
one of the prime destinations for
vacation bound Americans. If
you want to miss the busiest part
of the travel season, try to
schedule your visit before the
last week of June or immediate
ly following Labor Day. July-
August are the peak months in
Israel, just as in other coun
tries.
The demand for hotel space
can be expected to follow the pat
tern of 1968. Heaviest demand
will be for top accommodations
in Jerusalem, but if you are flex
ible and interested in stajAng at
some of the excellent Ijpifels in
the eastern part of the city it is
almost always possible to get ac
commodations in Jerus a 1 e m .
Hotel construction in Jerusalem
is proceeding at a healthy pace,
but it will still be a year or two
until the new rooms become
available in large numbers and
the demand is fully met.
Nearly everyone wants to
spend some time in Haifa, Israel’s
port in the north of the country,
but less hotel construction has
been undertaken here in recent
years and Haifa is a city that fills
up fast in terms of tourist ca
pacity.
Tel Aviv, still very much cen
tral on the itineraries of most
travelers, ha% the most room ca
pacity and here too hotel con
struction is proceeding rapidly.
Building hotels to accommodate
everyone in High Season means
building hotels that have to stay
largely empty during the slower
times of the year, so please bear
with us when space gets tight.
Just to repeat . . . You can
ensure yourself of space by
booking before or after rather
than during the seasonal peak.
One mark of the ambitious de
velopment scheduled for Israel’s
tourist industry was clear during
the recent visit of Minister of
Tourism and Development Moshe
Kol and the Director General of
the Ministry of Tourism Meir de
Shalit. Their visits were in con
nection with the launching of
a $20,000,000 issue, of Tourist In
dustry Development Corporation
stock. The money raised by the
issue will go to finance tourist
industry development. In past

You have to see the transfor
mation in the city of Eilat to be
lieve it. Eilat, Israel’s window on
the Orient, has come into its
own. Not only is the city de
veloping according to plan as a
port, it is also blooming as a
jumping off place for tours of
Sinai. One of the most drama
tic developments is the inaugura
tion of a passenger ship which
plies the waters of the Gulf of
Eilat and Sharm el Sheik. Com
plete with air conditioned rooms,
dining room, night club and bar,
the ship M.V. “Hei Daroma”
(which could be translated
“Southward Ho!”) has room for
400 passengers and serves as a
floating hotel for 120 of the pas
sengers while it is docked. Three
departures a week are scheduled
from Eilat at 2 p. m. Return from
Sharm el Sheik is the following
day at 2 p. m. The trip from
point to point is 8% hours. Prices
begin at $12 per person including
overnight on board the ship.
The hardy traveler can join up
with the Arkia-Egged 4-Day
Tour of Sinai. While the trip up
Mount Sinai is one of the most
vital travel experiences available,
it is not recommended for the
faint. Access to the Monastery on
the mountain is by bus over un
improved roads, accommodations
are also primitive.
The boat ride in itself, however,
is well worth the trip . . . and
you get Eilat touring as part of
the package.
There is still time to book
that youngster into one of the
many excellent Israel youth
programs. Whatever the age, there
is a program to suit the youthful
traveler.
Our latest advertising cam
paign carries the message of the
joys of family travel in Israel.
Under the headline, “Tell Your
Children Their Story — Take
Them to Israel This Summer,” is
an artistic interpretation ol a
father and daughter overlooking
a view of the Shrine of the Book
and the Israel Parliament Build
ing. To show you the thought
that goes into an advertisement
of this nature consider the
choices. Would you have picked
mother and son, father and
daughter, full family, mother and
daughter, or father and son? Fa
ther and daughter say the ex
perts. The relationship Is special
and it Is a sight that is more like
ly to move mother to travel than
any other combination.
Psychology aside, if you would
