Janice Rothschild to Lead
Small Group in Israel Tour
The announcement that Mrs.
Jacob M. Rothschild will con
duct a second Temple Tour to
Israel hag been greeted with en
thusiasm by persons familiar
with her recent activities in that
country. The group will leave At
lanta on October 8 and spend
two full weeks in Israel, after
which individuals will have a
choice of returning directly to
the United States or remaining
up to a week longer in either
Europe' or Israel.
Although the tour is officially
sponsored by the Temple, mem
bership will not be confined to
the congregation alone. The group
will be limited to twenty persons
with applications processed on a
first come first served basis. In
quiries may be made by calling
Mr. Lawrence Goldberg at The
Travel Mart, 524-0611.
Mrs. Rothschild has recently
returned from her third visit to
Israel since January, 1968, when
she and Rabbi Rothschild led the
first Temple Tour to Israel. Dur
ing the month that she spent
there last summer she produced
a series of vignette documentaries
on Jerusalem for Atlanta televis
ion station WAGA-TV. On her
latest trip she served as a mem
ber of a production team from
the University of Georgia Sta
tion WGTV, writing and produc
ing a film about Israeli children
for National Education Televis
ion. Her articles on life in Is
rael have appeared in the At
lanta Journal-Constitution Sun
day Magazine. One of them is
scheduled to be reprinted short
ly in a national publication.
“It is this point of meeting peo
ple and getting to know them
that I want to emphasize on my
tour,” Mrs. Rothschild asserts.
“Anybody can go to Israel and
see sights. I want to take peo
ple there to make friends.”
As a result her tour will fea -
ture evenings spent with Israelis,
lunch at the student cafeteria of
the Hebrew University, worship
services on Shabbat with one of
the three liberal congregations in
Jerusalem, a discussion with gov
ernment officials, and other op
portunities to see the various
facets of Israeli life as well as its
history and accomplishments. “Is
rael is the most exciting place
in the world to me,” she declares.
To visit it with her ahould be a
truly fascinating experience.

Dear Adolph,
The following is a letter which
was sent to all the members of
the Rabbinical Council of Amer
ica concerning the current situa
tion in Israel. I feel that it may
be of some interest to your
readers. (Letter was sent out by
the Rabbinical Council)
“The United States last week
joined in a unanimous vote to
“censure in the strongest terms”
actions taken by Israel regarding
Jerusalem.
Having abstained on a similar
resolution in May 1968, Amer
ican support of this resolution
seems to reflect a firmer line
taken by the Nixon administra
tion against Israel’s right to
unify the Holy city of Jerusalem.
The Security Council also
deplored “the failure of Israel to
show any regard for the General
Assembly and Security Council’s
resolutions.”
Nowhere in this resolution is
reference made to Jordan’s will
ful destruction of over 300 syn
agogues in Jerusalem, nor to its
desecration of the cemetery on
Mt. Olive; nor to its defiance of
previous UN orders to permit
access to the Western Wall and
other Holy sites during the 19
years of the illegal occupation
of Jerusalem-by Jordan.
U. S. support of this resolution
indicates the adoption by the
present administration of the
Scranton Report recommending
a so-called “even handed” ap
proach.
This shift of policy from that
of the Johnson administration is
further evidenced by the U. S.
failure to reject the latest Rus
sian position developed as a result
of the last Gromyko-Nasser
meeting.
The Soviet Union, with Egyp
tian consent, is giving as much
circulation as possible to its ver
sion of a Middle East settlement.
According to the Press, Israel
is expected to withdraw to the
old vulnerable armistice lines
which, by Soviet definition,
would become ‘secure’ bound
aries.

The Jarring mission is down
graded to the single role of help
ing to draw up demilitarized
zones. „
There is to be no direct ne
gotiations whatever between ihe
parties at any stage with a View
to the reconciliation of their dif
ferences.
The proposed arrangements for
Sharm-el-Sheikh, the strategic
entrance to the Gulf of Aqaba,
recreate the exact same condii
tiohs as before June 1967, name
ly, the stationing there of inter
national forces at Egypt’s consent.
As before, President Nasser will
be able, apparently, at any time,
to order these forces out as he
did in 1967 when he blockaded
the entrance to the Gulf.
The international force at
Sharm-el-Sheikh is to represent
‘geographic blocs,’ according to
the Washington Post. This would
appear to mean the inclusion in
it of Soviet or Soviet satellite
contingents, giving the Commun
ists an internationally recognized
and legal role in the area.
Israel’s fights in the Suez
Canal “would depend on the res
olution of the Palestine refugee
question.’
With regard to the Arab ref
ugees, they allegedly are to be
introduced into Israel without
condition, Israel being required
to waive its sovereign rights in
this whole issue.
The Soviet Union has also
suggested that the conversations
between the USA and the USSR
on the Middle East should con
tinue in Moscow, away from in
terferences in Washington.”
Kindest personal regards.
