SILVER
LINING
By RABBI SAMUEL SILVER
Who Wrote It?
We are the beneficiaries of
many literary gems whose
authorship we don't know.
Some cf the loftiest statements
have to be attributed to that
ubiquitous liaterature. Anony
mous.
However, every once in a
while we are able to track down
the origin of some masterpiece
we have admired. In this col
umn 1 am asking my readers
whether they know who wrote
the following. It has been widely
quoted and reprinted, but who
was responsible for creating it I
don’t know. It's called “All I
Got Was Words," and its heart
warming text is like this:
When I -was young and fancy
free,
My folks had no fine clothes
for me.
All I got was words:
Gott tzu danker,
Gott vet geben,
Zol men nor leben un zein
gezunt.
When I was wont to travel far,
They couldn’t provide me with
a car.
All I got was words:
Gey gezunt,
gey pamelech.
hob a glickliche reize.
I wanted to increase my
knowledge,
But they couldn't send me to
college;
All I got was words.
Hob sa.vchel,
Zei nit kein nar,
Toire'i iz di beste sehoireh.
The years have flown
the world has turned
Things I’ve forgotten
things I’ve remembered;
Yet I still remember;
Zog dem ernes,
Gib Tzedakah,
Hob rachmones,
Zei a Mensch.
All I gst was words;
Yet I’m truly rich:
Author, anyone?

Groups Study Ruling On
Congregation 'Fax Immunity
NEW YORK (JTA)— National
Jewish organizations are studying
the implications of a State Su
preme Court ruling in Mineola,
Long Island, holding that a Con
servative congregation had lost a
portion of its immunity from tax
ation because it has Leased part
of its property for commercial
use.
He said that this position ap
plied to the East Hills ruling.
Spokesmen for the Union of
American Hebrew Congregations,
the Reform congregational agen
cy, and for the Union of Orth
odox Jewish Congregations of
America, indicated that the Mi
neola ruling was under consider
ation. The UAHC spokesman said
the issue had been under study
for some time.
Earlier this year, the Synagogue
Council of America, the national
coordinating agency for the lay
Conservative and Orthodox Jew
ry, said the SCA had been con
sidering the issue for some time.
The statement was made by Rab
bi Hen’ y Siegman, SCA Execu
tive vice-president, in response
to an inquiry by the JTA on the
reactions of Jewish organizations
to an announcement that the
United States Supreme Court had
agreed to hear, this fall, 6 chal
lenge to the constitutionality of
state laws exempting church
property from real estate laws.
Rabbi Siegman explained that
the SCA had been “grappling
with the issue” of tax exemption
from real estate taxes because of
earlier taxpayer suits against ex
emption for non-religious affiliat
ed church property.
The decision was made by
Howard T. Hogan against Tem
ple Beth Sholom in East Hills
and the Roslyn Summer Day
Camp. The decision reportedly
stemmed from the first lawsuit
in New York state brought by a
taxpayer to force a religious
agency to pay taxes on a com
mercial operation with which it
was involved. The suit was
brought by Mrs. Selma Winter,
of East Hills, a former member
of the synagogue. According to
the suit, the camp used the 12Vi
acres of synagogue grounds and
all rooms 'exoept the sanctuary
for the campers.
Dr. Bernard Segal, executive
director of the United Synagogue
-of America, the association of
Conservative congregations, told
the Jewish Telegraphic Agency
that the United Synagogue’s pos
ition has been that any house of
worship which makes its facil
ities available for commercial
purposes should be prepared to
pay the taxes on such earnings.
