point.”
Rabbi Arthur Gilbert, assistant
to the president of the Jew
ish Reconstructionist Foundation,
said to Dr. Copeland, "What you
really mean to do is not conver
sion work but witnessing. You
don’t do this by ringing doorbells
and handing out tracts. You do
it by letting God into your own
life, by creating a community of
such selfhood, such humanity,
that it is a profound witness in
its own right.” He added, “I
would like to compete with you
for such witness.”
Rabbi Marc H. Tannenbaum, di
rector of the AJCommittee’s in
terreligious affairs department
told the interfaith group that the
Nazi Holocaust and the meaning
of the State of Israel to the Jew
ish people and to Judaism were
the "two decisive events of con
temporary Jewish experience”
that "must be tgken into account
in any effort to understand the
interior life of the Jew today.”
Rabbi Tannenbaum maintained
that it was impossible to under
stand Jews or Judaism today
without understanding “the im
pact on American Jews of the
Arab-Israeli war of June. 1967.”
He said Arab threats to destroy
Israel and annihilate its popula
tion drew “a response of Jewish
unity, of Jewish solidarity, and
of a new consciousness of inter
dependence in fate and destiny
that is literally unprecedented in
the last 2000 years of Jewish his
tory.”
He said that response stemmed
in part "from a still deep psychic
reaction to the Nazi Holocaust
of the 1930s,” from a "preoccu-
ation with Christian silence in
face of Nazi barbarism” and
from feelings of guilt over the
silence and inadequacy of the
Jewish response.
Rabbi Tannenbaum said the
f. ct that Israel beca* c a haven
for the Jewish survivors of the
holocaust was one reason for its out of the distinctive Jewish
importance to Jews today. “An ethos and their own intellectual,
equally important fact is that spiritual and moral resources,
Israel is the only place in the their own economic, military,
world where Jews have created, political and social institutions.”

Atlanta’s Next Mayor Will Need Maynard Jackson As Vice Mayor
My fellow Atlantans,
I want to serve you as Vice Mayor. I need
and want your votes. If you will elect me, I will
make the Vice Mayor’s office your independent
voice in city government. With your support,
I can take action on the issues we face,
including unequal and inadequate city services,
race relations, transportation, and community
participation in school, police, housing,
employment, zoning and urban renewal problems.
My experiences as a lawyer for the white and
black poor of Atlanta have deepened my
commitment to one Atlanta . . . one people. My
experiences in a segregated Atlanta have given
me insight into the problems of all oppressed
people, whether they be black or white, young
or old, workers or street people, housewives
or working women.
I choose to stand for the responsible power
of the People. 1 also want to work with the
Mayor and the Board of Aldermen constructively,
and I will “tell it like it is” when communities
or persons are unfairly treated. This is my
solemn vow. The Vice Mayor’s office must be
the People’s office.
Let us, therefore, put away the past. Let us
build together an Atlanta which will show
the nation a model of hope in a country faced
with violence and conflict.
For Vice Mayor, I am the right man at
the right time.
Yours in victory,
Elect Maynard Jackson Vice Mayor October 7 — Paid For By Atlantans For Maynard Jackson
