'Hunger Day' Observance Dec 15
dent of the Emma us House
chapter, National Welfare Rights
Organization.
Funds received for hunger re
lief will be divided equally
among the four sponsor organi
zations, unless otherwise desig
nated by donors.
Mayor Ivan Allen Jr. has pro
claimed Monday, Dec. 15, “Hun
ger Day” in Atlanta.
His action came in response to
a request from Atlanta’s Prot
estant, Catholic and Jewish so
cial services and the city’s
Welfare Rights Organization.
Atlantans are asked, in the
proclamation, to live for that day
on a welfare food budget of 14
cents per person, per meal —
the amount allowed in President
Richard M. Nixon’s new welfare
reform proposal.
What they save, and any
thing they can add to it, may be
sent to “Hunger,” Box 7115, At
lanta 30301 to be used by Atlan
ta’s Christian and Jewish social
service agencies and the local
chapter, National Welfare Rights
Organization, for hunger relief
during the holiday season.
Citizens concerned about hun
ger are also being asked, by the
sponsor organization, to write
their congressmen and state leg
islators, urging them to sponsor
or support legislation aimed at
doing something about the
causes of hunger.
The “Hunger Day” observance
is intended, according to Dr.
Harmon Moore, executive secre
tary of the Christian Council of
Metropolitan Atlanta, to focus
attention on the hunger problem
in Atlanta.
Research by the Community
Council of the Atlanta Area,
Inc., completed in July, 1968, he
said, indicates that one of every
four Atlanta families is living on
a poverty income, defined by the
U.S. government as under $3,000,
when the study was made.
This and other studies assem
bled by the “Hunger Day”
planners indicates that Georgia,
and Atlanta, have a higher level
of hunger than the national
average.

Social Services and the Atlanta
chapter, National Welfare Rights
Organization, began planning in
October for a “Hunger Day” to
bring the matter to public at
tention.
Churches and other groups are
being asked to sponsor “Hunger
Day” meals, with grits, collards
and whatever else meal plan
ners can afford on a 14 cent per
person budget. Families are be
ing asked to do the same thing.
Atlanta’s “Hunger Day” ob
servance follows a similar Dec.
1-7 national “test” sponsored by
the Churches’ Crusade Against
Hunger, a national group. Pub
lic officials and others were
asked to live for a week on a
welfare budget, to test the ade
quacy of the Nixon administra
tion’s proposed minimum assis
tance level for a family of four
of $1,600 a year.

Atlanta “Hunger Day’ includes
