Why Most Blessings
Refer To Acts of God
In Present Tense
QUESTION: Why is it that
most of the blessings which are
pronounced by Jews refer to the
acts of God in the present tense?
ANSWER: Actually, what ap
pears to be the present tense is
also the form of the “perfect”
in Hebrew grammar. There are
those, however, who say that the
goodness of God is referred to
in the present tense because it
is only the limitation of human
intellect which makes us classify
time in terms of past, present,
and future while all time is one
unit in the eyes of the Almighty
As the Psalmist said “a thou
sand years are like a day in thy
sight.” It also indicates, accord
ing to others, that the creative
powers of the Almighty are con
stantly functioning in our uni
verse. The world, therefore, is
always a dynamic living process
and never actually a finished
product. Thus, when we thank
the Almighty for “creating the
fruit of the earth” for example,
we indicate that He is still lend
ing' his creative powers to the
world through his agent, man.

QUESTION: Why do some
blessings end with the word
“amen” simply used as a re
sponse by those who hear the
blessing, as is usually the case?
ANSWER: Usually, this is
done to indicate that this bless
ing concludes the section of the
liturgy which one is reciting. It
also indicates that this particu
lar blessing completes an action
and has nothing to do with any
action or blessing which may
follow. Otherwise, the rabbis
frown upon the individual who
would recite the response
“amen” after a blessing which
he himself made, since, in a
normal circumstance, the
“amen” is intended to be a re
sponse which indicates ■ agree
ment and concurring belief on
the part of the listener.

Historical Society
To Preserve
Synagogue, 93
WASHINGTON (JTA)—A 93-
year-old synagogue building that
once housed Washington’s Adas
Israel congregation will be moved
virtually intact next month to a
new location three blocks from
its present one so that it can be
preserved as an historic site. The
brick and wood structure was
purchased by the Jewish Histor
ical Society of Washington from
the Metropolitan Area Transit
Authority which is budding a
subway where the synagogue
originally stood. The Historical
Society, a non-profit group, paid
a token fee of $10 and is seeking
a Federal grant for historic pres
ervation.
The Department of Housing and
Urban Development has agreed
tentatively to pay half of the
$150,000 proving cost. The balance
and funds for restoration of the
building will come from bank
loans secured by personal notes
of leaders of the Jewish Historical
Society. The synagogue was con
structed in 1876. Adas Israel
moved out in 1908 but retained the
property which has now been sold
to the Transit Authority.
The lower floor of the syna
gogue had been converted to
stores. Only the upper floor, con
taining the sanctuary, will be
moved to the new site which the
Historical Society has leased from
the District of Columbia govern
ment. It will be put on a new
foundation. The old synagogue is
of Federal style architecture. The
interior is of pine paneling paint
ed white and is well preserved.
