THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE
Demonstrations Against Pompidou
Sucessful But Status Still Quo
NEW YORK (JTA)— French
President Georges Pompidou
told a television news confer
ence here at the end of his tum
ultuous official visit to the
United States, that the embargo
on French jet warplanes to Is
rael “will last as long as the
war does.’’
He also assserted that France
did not set out to sell Mirage
jets to Libya. “We set out to fill
a void and Libya did not have
the planes. If we did not sell
them to her, someone else
would.” He said that he was
“satisfied” with his American
visit despite the many pro-Israel
demonstrations staged in cities,
both those he visited and many
he did not.
An example was an assembly
of more than 5,000 protestors ga
thered outside of the Waldorf-
Astoria Hotel where the French
President was being feted. Cor
doned off by police, the demon-
sterators massed for four hours,
shouting “Pompidou, Go Home”

identified positively. The Army
chaplain flew to Zurich after the
disaster to try to determine
which were the Jews. He said
there wereTUatholics, Protestants
and one Buddhist aboard the air
craft and their presumed re
mains would be buried abroad
according to their respective re
ligious rites. In her eulogy, Mrs.
Meir said “Our grief and anger
will turn into a great force, both
moral and actual, against the
murderers and the Arab states
who become partners in their
crimes by aiding and sheltering
them.”
PARIS (JTA) — The French
newspaper Le Figaro published an
interview with a spokesman for
the Popular Front for the Lib
eration of Palestine who pledged
that his group would continue
its assaults op aircraft serving
Israel. The Popular Front claim
ed credit for the Swissair dis
aster. A hasty disclaimer was
issued by the Arab guerrilla
coalition in Amman of which
the Front is 'a constituent.

and “Boo hoo Pompidou.” Pla
cards were carried with such
messages as “How Many Jewish
Boys Are Buried In France?
How many Arabs” and “Equality
of Arms in the Mideast” and “Is
raeli Blood and Arab Oil Don’t
Mix.”
President Nixon was so dis
turbed by the voluminous pro
test that he at first telephoned
an apology to Pompidou and
then followed this with an un
expected flight to New York to
attend the dinner. The President
said jokingly at the dinner that
he wanted the Pompidous to see
the United States “as a President
of the United States saw it. I
must say, we overdid a bit, as
we usually do.” He also said
that the Franco-American friend
ship “is so deep” that “any minor
irritation or bad manners or dif
ferences are not going to impair
it.”
Mayor Richard Daley, of Chi
cago, scene of one of the largest
protests, said nothing had hap
pened in Chicago to justify the
Nixon apology. Daley said the
demonstrators deserved praise
for "the orderly manner in
which they exercised fheir rights
as citizens.” Pompidou was crit
ical of the Chicago police for
allowing demonstrators to get
close to him and his group.
The day before the New York
demonstration, the French Pres
ident cancelled a scheduled
meeting with representatives of
American Jewish organizations.
In Las Vegas, Mrs. Moshe
Dayan — visiting the United
States on a 17-city fund-raising
tour — said the demonstrations
were justified. She said that
while in generally she did not
favor demonstrations and doubt
ed their value, the anti-French
protests were different and sig
nificant.
Richard Cohen, American
Jewish Congress associate direc
tor and spokesman for the Pres
idents’ Conference, said the New
York turnout was “excellent, es
pecially in the face of President
Nixon apology.” David Sidman,
executive director of the Jewish
War Veterans New York di
vision, said he was “glad” the
JWV withstood White House
“pressure” to cancel a pre-sched-
uled meeting the same day at
the Waldorf-Astoria hotel.
The massive demonstrations
against French President Geor
ges Pompidou and his Mideast
policy were generally viewed as
justified in the American demo
cratic tradition but as certain
to have little impact on that
policy. France’s attitude on the
controversial sale of 110 Mirage
jets to Libya and its embargo
which withholds 50 Mirages
bought and paid for by Israel,
is unchanged. Told by reporters
of complaints by Jewish leaders
that France reneged on its Mi
rage deal with Israel, Pompidou
replied “If you meet them, you
can tell them I am ready to pay
them back tomorrow.” He re
ferred to the $56 million Israel
paid to the Dassault aircraft
manufacturers. The Israelis have
not asked for a refund and ap
parently hope that the planes
eventually will be delivered.
