Bishop Sheen
Delights Jewish
Audience
Stamford, conn, (wup) —
Appearing as the special guest
at a recent Friday night inter
faith religious service in the
well-known Temple Sinai here,
pared the current Israel-Arab
dispute to A husband and wife
domestic quarrel over two
houses, one dominated by the
Eagle, the other by a Bear.
Introduced by the Temple’s
renowned Rabbi Samuel M.
Silver — noted author, lecturer
and columnist—“as a man who
has made a mockery of the word
retirement, the Archbishop told
the fascinated Temple audience,
among which were many non-
Jews, that “the Eagle and the
Bear are handing crockery,
chairs, wood and furniture to
the husband and wife to throw
at each other and the poor peo
ple in the middle are the ones
who suffer. The money spent by
the Eagle and the Bear,” he add
ed in his well-known sharp and
witty manner, “could be better
spent on peace.”
Referring to the Holy Land
which he visited five years agb,
Archbishop Sheen said that that
land is “where Christians and
Jews are very close and our
histories intertwine. We love the
same God,” he stressed, “the
God of Abraham, Isaac and
Jacob.”
Yiddish Writer
Wins Book Prize
NEW YORK (JTA) — Isaac
Bashevis Singer, the Yiddish
novelist, was one of the seven
winners of the 1970 National
Book Awards here in the 21st
annual salute of the publishing
industry to outstanding writers.
Mr. Singer, who has been
winning steadily wider accep
tance among American readers
for his translated writings, re
ceived the $1,000 cash prize for
“A Day of Pleasure” in the chil
dren’s literature competition.
He told the audience that he had
decided to write for children be
cause “they don’t give a hoot
about the critics, they have no
use for psychology, they detest
sociology . . They still believe
in God, the family, angels, devils,
witches, goblins, logic, clarity,
punctuation and other such ob
solete stuff.”
The poet Robert Lowell de
plored the fact that Ezra Pound
had never received one of the
annual awards. Lowell received
the prize awarded to Elizabeth
Bishop for her “Com p 1 e t e
Poems” because she was unable
to be present. The poet chose the
occasion to read a poem by Miss
Bishop about Pound’s satirical
references to Jews. Kenneth Rex-
roth, a member of the poetry
panel, took issue with the poet,
telling the audience of 1,500
guests, that they would not be
associated “with an anti-Semitic
fascist.”
