Remember the story of Ruth
in the Bible? The non-Jewish
Ruth fell in love with Judaism
and declared to her Jewish mo
ther-in-1 a w ,
“Where you
lodge there I
shall lodge,” etc.
The American
consul in Tel
Aviv is “doing
a Ruth.” A non-
Jew, who was'
born in Tennes
see, Clifford English is now 69.
He has been in the American
diplomatic corps for many years
and has had tours in China.
Japan, Mexico, South America,
Pakistan, Austria. Germany,
Argentina, and Turkey.
But, we read in the Jewish
Daily Forward, Mr. English has
fallen in love with Israel and
with retirement at the end of
this year, he will remain in the
land.
English told a reporter of the
Israeli paper, “Maariv.” accord
ing to Leib Rachman, that he is
infatuated with Israel He de
clared that no people on earth
is mare devoted to democracy
He is amazed at the way in
which the Israelis treat their
Arab residents despite the gen-
ffleoda! tendencies of the Arab
twifais He says that hfe in -Is
raeli b full of fascinating activ
ities. He atea admires the acces
sibility of high Israeli officials.
He often “'drops in” at the
Moshe Dayans for a chat. That
could never happen anywhere
else, he says.
English's daughter. Linda. 17,
agrees with her father. She loves
Israel and rejoices over her
father’s decision to stay in the
country.
Says this modern counterpart
of Ruth: “If Israel remains
v iable, I will remain here for the
rest of my life. If Israelis are
forced to leave, I will go with
them. Where you go, there I
also go ... ”

name tags identifying them as

United Nations late last year,
asking to be allowed to emigrate
to IsraeL The students were
charged with violation of a 1938

the D. C. law, which was passed
to prevent demonstrations out
side the German and Austrian
embassies in 1938, when they
were under Nazi control.
The students from Washing
ton area colleges were members
of the New Washington Com
mittee for Human Rights. Max
imum penalty on conviction is
60 days in jail or a $100 fine.
The trial was postponed to en
able the judge to rule on the
constitutionality of the law,
which permits persons involved
in labor disputes to picket for
