Although Dreyfuss and Forbes
Field are gone, let us hope they
are not forgotten. Both played a
big part in baseball history.
A native of Freiberg, Germany,
Dreyfuss arrived in the United
States in 1881 and found employ
ment in a whiskey distillery in
Paducah, Kentucky. Advised
that outdoor activity would cure
his poor health, he organized
and played on a semi-profession
al baseball team. After the dis
tillery moved to Louisville, Ken
tucky, in 1888, Dreyfuss became
a part-owner of the Louisville
Colonels, a major league team.
He served the Colonels as secre
tary and treasurer, and became
the club’s president in 1899.
When the National League
eliminated the Louisville franch
ise in 1900, Dreyfuss shifted to
the Pittsburgh Pirates. He ac
quired complete control of the
team in 1901, and the Pirates
won three consecutive National
League pennants. At the end of
the 1903 season, Dreyfuss prop
osed that his- National League
champions meet the American
League champion Boston Red
Sox in a series of games. The
two leagues had been at odds
prior to 1903, and Dreyfuss be
lieved a post-season contest
would establish better relations
between them, and would create
additional interest in baseball.
Although Boston triumphed in
the initial World Series, five
games to three, the Pittsburgh
players received more money
than their opponents when
Dreyfuss generously turned over
all his proceeds to his men.
While not the most affluent
club in the National League, the
Pirates under Dreyfuss were al
ways contenders for the pennant.
Unlike the majority of club
owners, baseball was Dreyfuss’
only business, and except for the
field manager’s job, he handled
every phase of the Pirates’ op
eration. In 1909 he built Forbes
Field, the first modern baseball
stadium. He personally scouted
the minor leagues for new tal
ent, and many of his players be
came stars. Honus Wagner, Fred
Clarke, Rube Waddell, Paul and
Lloyd Waner, Max Carey, Hazen
(Kiki) Cuyler and Harold (Pie)
Traynor played for Dreyfuss, and
all are members of the Baseball
Hall of Fame. Dreyfuss almost
had two other Hall of Famers
but lost George Sisler on a tech
nicality and passed up Tris
Speaker when he found out the
outfielder smoked cigarettes.
During his reign the Pirates
won two World Series (1909, _
1925), six National League pen
nants, and finished in the first
division 26 times. He served as
the National League first vice
president (1929-32) and for many
years drew up the schedule for
both the National and American
Leagues. Barney Dreyfuss died
in 1932 and Pittsburgh didn’t
win another World Series until
1960.
Why isn’t Barney Dreyfuss in
baseball’s Hall of Fame and why
didn’t Pittsburgh name its new
stadium for one of the pioneers
of the modem game? Those are
good questions.
