Blintzes and Gene:
Well, you guessed it—the three
companions all smoke—but he
doesn’t. As they say in Yiddish,

On Shevuot we eat blintzes
as on Thanksgiving day, turkeys.
We eat blintzes on Shevuot,
the Koretzer rebbe said, because
milk products are the food of
children and on Shevuot we
all become children.
After a dish of blintzes, who
can feel old? Generation gap,
shmeneration gap, we say. It’s
all a lot of anti-Semitic propa
ganda.
Shevuot recalls the time back
in Sinai when the children of
Israel were given the Torah. So
Shevuot is called the Time of
the Giving of the Torah.
Why is it not called the Time
of the Receiving of the Torah?
Because, the rabbis explained,
people receive things at differ-,
ent times. Some have not yet
received the Ten Command
ments.
It’s not altogether hard to un
derstand. Try to give people
things and they immediately be
come suspicious.
Shevuot is the time of love
and flowers. Why go to the mov
ies? On Shevuot you can hear
a love story read in the syna
gogue—the romance of Ruth
and Boaz. We can tell you in
advance. It turns out happily.
Ruth gets her man.
On Shevuot it is the custom
wrote a rose Is a rose is a rose,
it was the Shevuot spirit break
ing out in her.

he is leaving to start a second

HUMAN NATURE
A little story in the Hebrew
daily, Maariv, interested us. An
Israeli official recalled how he
and three of his boyhood school
mates were once caught by their
teacher stealthily smoking be
hind the schoolhouse. The
teacher gave them a long lec
ture and demanded that all four
