QUESTION: Why are there
sense letters of irregular sise In
the Scroll of the Torah; for
example, some unusually large
and some unusually small?
.*28T?'—
ANSWER:: The Masorites, who
were responsible for the text
and its preservation, felt that
the unusual or irregular letters
in the Torah each had a special
purpose which was to draw the
attention of the reader and stu
dent of the Torah to its contents.
A small letter would often in
dicate a double meaning for the
word.
QUESTION: What is a “yar-
mulkeP
n. .*Qt
ANSWER: A yarmulke is a
Slavic word meaning a skullcap
which observant Jews wear
vNfen they are not wearing a
regular hat
QUESTION: What Is the Jew-
bb fradMiau regarding suicide?
ANSWER: The Jewish tradi
tion considers suicide to be a
gave sin. The rabbis go as far
as saying that one does not eul
ogize a suicide nor does one tear
his clothes for him, nor does
remove his shoes for him
2:1). The tradition is)
to bury a sufcMe near the fence
of fhe cemetery, thus, in a way,
separating him from the other
people in the cemetery.
Some later rabbinic authori
ties insisted that a real suicide
eould only be one who was not
in perfect command of his men
tis faculties; thus, there was a
general tendency to consider all
as being mentally ill,
so not really responsible for
what they were doing.
