Security Council, had played a
key role in the drawing up of
that resolution.
Asked whether he thought
t)iat the Soviet Union, in the
light of its military involvement
in the Middle East could be
considered as sincerely seeking
peace in the area, Mr. Hartling
declared that “we must hope
that the Big Powers will not
seek a confrontation and will
confine or limit the escalation
(of the Arab-Israeli fighting) to
control the situation. We must
hope for that”
The Danish Foreign Minister
added that there were signs out
side the Mideast area, at Vienna
and elsewhere, that the United
States and the Soviet Union
were seeking to avoid a con
frontation. "Now and then,” he
said, “there is a sign that the
two powers share a common in
terest in keeping the peace.”
He welcomed the recent state
ment by Prime Minister Golda
Meir reaffirming Israel’s accep
tance .of the Nov. 22 resolution
and the statement by Foreign
Minister Abba Eban expressing
Israel’s readiness to leave areas
occupied in the Six-Day War in
exchange for peace. But he
pointed out that both sides in
the conflict shared a serious lack
of trust which militated against
any approach to a settlement.
The Danish Government’s
policy on the Middle East, the
Foreign Minister said, was based
on two principles: that every
country had the right to a recog
nized and guaranteed existence
and that acquisition of territory
by military conquest could not
be recognized.
If the Arabs and Israelis, he
said would each recognize both
of these principles, “it might
mean the possibility for Dr. Jar
ring (United Nations special
envoy) to resume his mission.”
The present impasse resulting
would have to be resolved, he
pointed out, by simultaneous
action from both sides. Once
there were moves in this direc
tion he said, there would be a
basis for the resumption of Dr.
Jarring’s activities.
Mr. Hartling spoke at some
length on his recent visit to Is
rael and described Danish-
Israeli relations as “excellent.”
He expressed the conviction that
“in Israel, they love peace and
it must come.” The Foreign Min
ister was asked how it happened
that Denmark had taken a vir
tually unprecedented action in
opening its gates, without con
ditions or restrictions, to Jews
being expelled from Poland.
More" than 1,600 Polish Jews
have found refuge in Denmark
in recent years. They receive
Government assistance and are
free to establish permanent resi
dence and take employment.
Denmark’s open door policy,
Mr. Hartling said, was a reflec
tion of his country’s tradition of
hospitality and opposition to op
pression. He noted proudly that
although Denmark was confron
ted with severe economic prob
lems, there had been no criti
cism of the Government policy
or of the Use of public funds
for aid to the refugees.
