Needed—A Return To Charter Obligations
•••
UNITED NATIONS, (WUP)—
On June 26, this world or
ganization—bom out of the cha
os of World War II which took
the lives of tens of millions of
people Including six million
Jews—is commemorating its 25th
anniversary in a special fete held
in the city of its birth, San Fran
cisco.
Twenty-five years seem a long
time. In the perspective of his
tory, however, the quarter of a
century does not even add up
to a second. But what a ‘sec
ond’ this has been! Historic?
Indeed, for all mankind includ
ing, of course world Jewry
which, though resurrected in
sovereignity- in the ancient
homeland, had met with a catas-

trophe, a holocaust, unparalleled
in the annals of tyrannical atro
cities committed by Satanic for
ces on the planet since time im
memorial.
It has been a dark, trying and
perplexing period. But out of
a ray of light; a beacon, radiated
in the land of Zion which be
came the haven of the hundreds
of thousands of escapees, broken
in body and weary in spirit. The
‘dry bones’ came to life. It was
truly a resurrection.
And one may ask during this
25th birthday of the UN: what
role did the World Organization
play as an ‘instrument’ towards
the resurrection of Israel? That
it played a vital role in 1947 and
1948 goes without saying. The
vote on ‘Partition’—despite the
many abortive attempts to frus
trate positive action—is recorded
in UN archives as one of the
most historic acts on the part of
the General Assembly. The de
cision was taken. There was no
turning back despite second
thoughts and regrets on the part
of many, including Britain and
the United States at the time.
Indeed, there are still some
Member States here who would
like to turn the clock back and
reverse history by invalidating
the UN judgement on Jewish
statehood. Having failed mili
tarily, they are lobbying day
and night in attempts to win
votes to undo Israel politically.
And these Member States are
encouraged in this their sinister
schemes against another Member
State by the mighty Soviet
Union which wields much influ
ence in all UN organs including,
of course, the Security Council.
It is well, then, during this
25th anniversary *— when all of
these States offer lip-service in
high praise of the World Or-

ganization—to look into the UN
Charter, to which they have
pledged loyal allegiance, and see
to what extent they have been
faithful to its aims and princi
ples.
Judging by their acts and
deeds during the past quarter
century—-and your correspond
ent has in mind the majority of
Members — few can exempt
themselves from the transgressor
category. Scan the globe, con
sider the Soviets on matters of
human rights, their invasion of
Czechoslovakia; Turn to Iraq
on. the hangings of innocents
and the harassment and perse
cution of Jews in all the Arab
States; consider the Ardbs’
threats to destroy Israel, their
open warlike declarations; view
the whole world scene, in Asia,
in Africa and in Latin America,
and a horrible picture emerges
which contradicts the very es
sence of the first four clauses of
Article I of the United Nations
Charter, the original of which
is now on display in San Fran
cisco. Let’s examine them:
“The Purposes of the United
Nations are:
“1. To maintain international
peace and security, and to that
end: to take effective collective
measures for the prevention and
removal of threats to the peace,
and for the suppression of acts
of aggression or other breaches
of the peace, and to bring about
by peaceful means, and in con
formity with the principles of
justice and international law,
adjustment or settlement of in
ternational disputes or situations
which might lead to a breach
of the peace;
“2. To develop friendly rela
tions among nations based on
respect for the principle of equal
rights and self-determination of
peoples, and to take other ap
propriate measures to strengthen
universal peace;
“3. To achieve international
cooperation in solving interna
tional problems of an economic,
social, cultural, or humanitar
ian character, and in promoting
and encouraging respect for hu
man rights and for fundamen
tal freedoms for all without dis
tinction as to race, sex, lang
uage, or religion; and,
“4. To be a center for har
monizing actions of nations in
the attainment of these common
ends.”
Instead of offering mere lip-
service during this 25th birth
day of the UN, the guilty UN
Member States might well re
read their own Charter, but
more especially the following
contained in the Preamble: “And
for these ends, to practice tol
erance and live together in peace
with one another as good neigh
bors, and to unite our strength
to maintain international peace
and security ..."
