We were reading about some scientific research taking place there. Herbert Spencer qi\pe said that man had a peculiar genius. He never does anything right until he has first tried every possible wrong method. The obvious eludes us. The best way to attract attention to anything is to conceal it. This applies even to such fields as power. Man has learned to dig coal and oil from the depths of the earth for power. FOX QUESTION: Why do many people cover their head with the Tallith daring prayer? ANSWER: Some claim that this is a means of making man humble in the face of the Al mighty so that he will be fear ful of the Almighty. Others say that this is done so that man would wrap himself and cover himself with the Tallith which symbolizes the commandments of the Almighty. There are those who claim that doing so would aid a man in concentrating on his prayers and would prevent him from being distracted by outside influences. HUR8TION: Why ta tt that each of the fringes of a Tallith has eight strands? ANSWER: Some trace this to the Commandment in the Bible which uses the word for fringe in the plural (Geddilin—Twisted Cords). Since the Bible ordered these cords to be put on all four corners, and the twisted cord is made up of two single ones, two twisted cords would be four singles which become eight when they are doubled over. Some commentaries claim that having eight cords on each of the four corners gives a total of thirty- two cords and thirty-two is the numerical equivalent of the Hebrew word for “chai” (JLiev.) They also say that the number of cords are thus representative of the whole Pentateuch since the Pentateuch begins with the letter Beth and ends with the letter Lamed, the two letters which make up the Hebrew word for “heart” The fringes, therefore, are representative of the Torah as well as the heart, it being understood that the Torah is the “heart” of Jewish tradition and of the Jewish peo ple. She told how some sixty students had descended on their home. "I got hold ot a young student with a very ugly sign about ‘the murder of children.’ I told him that if he really cared about children, he could come with me and work with retarded chil dren. It’s easy just to carry signs.” “It is those who don’t have to go out and work for their edu cation that cause all of this mon key business,” she said. She re called how as a young woman she had to take a job to help finance her young husband’s college study. “The Humph reys,” she said, “had to go through a depression, but they went to work and didn’t think everyone- owed them a living.” “The young people in Ameri ca,” she said, “lacked the sense of purpose which the young peo ple ot Israel who must defend their country have.” Maybe the Israeli scientists can produce n&t only a noiseless car but a noiseless college stu dent. Mrs. Humphrey would welcome it. She loves Israel. It is one of the most exciting places in the world, she said, and “oh the trees, the fields of grain and cotton.” This is Mrs. Humphrey’s third and her hus band’s fourth visit to Israel. They should settle there. The Hebrew University would prob ably give him a job as he has in Minnesota. When election time comes around in America, he could return to America and run for President.
