matic economic dislocation in
time of stress.- The salary scale
of one profession is very fre
quently linked contractually to
the scale of another profession,
which is linked to still another,
The fact that they had 'been
quiet, patient, docile and disci
plined all these years, given the
run-around while other workers
obtained benefits, added to their
claim for public good will.
The action of the nurses was
but one symptom of a general
malaise, and but one manifesta
tion of what will undoubtedly
become a major series of moves
within the next month or two.
Rising in revolt, as they do every
once in a while in this land of
socialist equality, will be what
for want of better terms may be
called the professionals, the aca
demicians or the intellectuals of
society. Once again the Israel
university graduate is up in
arms at the steady deterioration
of his economic position.
The Histadrut, Israel’s Fede
ration of Labor, has been strugg
ling valiantly to hold the line.
The various associations of
university teachers are not in
the Histadrut. The high school
teachers’ association quit the
Histadrut a few years ago. More
professionals may follow, as they
WHAT'S
COOKING
By RUTH SIRKIS
A Cool Summer Soup
Summer days call for refresh
ing, cool, and easy dishes. Well,
how about combining the refresh
ing taste of buttermilk, the cool
green of cucumbers, in an easy
way? Try it and you will get a
cool summer soup that needs no
cooking. Serve it as a first course
of a summer light dinner, or just
enjoy it as a snack. The soup js
thick and satisfying yet it is
very low in calories. Some of
you may be reminded of the
Cholodink, which is Russian cold
cucumber soup, but this one is
easier to assemble.
For two servings:
Two cups buttermilk
One medium cucumber
Two taps, instant parve onion
soup
Two tsps. onion flakes
(dehydrated)
One tsp. dried dill weed
One tsp. salt—dash pepper
Two strings of parsley
1. Peel cold cucumber and dice
it.
2. Measure two cups butter
milk and pour into a blender.
Add the other ingredients, and
the diced cucumber.
3. Blend for 3 minutes at
medium speed. Taste and correct
seasoning.
4. Serve immediately in mugs
or soup bowls. Garnish with the
parsley.

CARL ALPERT
Professionals in Revolt
HAIFA —- The nationwide
strike of the nurses earlier this
summer was a terrifying exper
ience. It was not a pretty sit
uation, as hundreds of nurses,
for days on end, refused to at
tend the needs of their patients
in the various hospitals, as a
means of pressing , for economic
improvement ift their own stat
us.
Yet surprisingly, the nurses
enjoyed a considerable measure
of public support and good will.
While not condoning the ap
parently immoral actions of the
nurses, the public understood
their plea that nurses’ salaries
and working conditions were SO
bad that the profession was go
ing to pieces.
Old nurses were leaving; new
ones were not joining — and
the health services of the state
were in grave danger of collapse
unless immediate steps were
taken to make the practice of
nursing more attractive. They
struck, then, for the benefit of
ultimate better care for their
patients.
see Histadrut leadership catering
to the working classes at the
expense, the professionals claim,
of their own status. Every rise
in prices, and every increase in
labor wages, reduces the gap
between laborer and professional
and puts increasing pressure on
the latter. Unease and dissatis
faction are now rapidly reaching
a boiling'point.
Doctors, teachers, lawyers,
professors, engineers, nurses,
chemists, judges, social workers
are but a few of the classifica
tions who find common cause.
It is estimated there are about
60,000 academically trained per
sons working in Israel today, and
the number is increasing rapidly
as the colleges produce more
Bachelor, Master and Doctor re
cipients each year.
Unfortunately, the govern
ment and labor leadership of
the country has contributed
over the past two decades to
the creation of a unique Israel
time-bomb — a built-in set-up
which provides for almost auto-

so that if a raise or improvement
is somehow obtained by one
group, it triggers off a chain re
action. Like a row of standing
dominoes, they all go over —
and that is what is about to
happen in Israel.
The intensity of the nurses’
strike was but a preview of
what is in store. The crisis has

fury in the early fall — unless
in the meantime the Egyptians

such circumstances, internal
problems will be put aside —
temporarily.
