Borders...
Continued from page 6
In the three years since the
Golan Heights came Into Is
raeli hands, 11 settlements have
r been established there, moot of
them at strategically important
points. The first was established
on KKL land acquired long be
fore 1948 which Ml into Syrian
hands during the 1948 Libera
tion. War. Preparations for the
new settlements are largely
under the direction of Mordechai
Karniel, the dedicated kibbntx-
nlk who directs KKL activities
in the Heights. He is probably
better acquainted with the terri
tory than any other man and is
an enthusiast over its possibil
ities. To. travel' with him and
explore the area is to be in
fected with his enthusiasm and
his hopes for its development.
From Mordechai Karniel you
will hear expounded with almost
religious fervor the affirmation
that “if we don’t go to the bor
ders, the borders will come to
us.” He cherishes every foot of
the Golan Heights and is de
termined to make it Jewish. The
11 new settlements in the
Heights are his pride, joy and
special concern and he makes it
his business to visit them reg
ularly. His immediate concern is
Hall of Fame
By RABBI SAMUEL SILVER
Ever hear of the Hall of
Fame?
I mean the original one, not
the baseball (me (at Coopers-
town, N. Y.), or the football one
(Canton, Ohio), or the basket
ball one (Springfield, Mass.).
The Hall
Fame is
tual place;
a rotunda in
Bronx,
the main cam
pus of the Uni
versity of the
City of New York is located.
In the area there is a series
of busts. Each one is of an in
dividual deemed to be impor
tant in the history of the United
rabbis who helped make Amer
ica a more vigorous democracy.
Nor Japcb Schiff, who bailed
our country out financially
once.
The Jewish person who has
gotten the most votes for Hall
of Fame entry is the great Lil
lian Wald, the social worker of
the Henry Street Settlement
House in New York. Getting into
the Hall, 1 should explain, is
accomplished through a ma
jority vote of the board of
trustees of tfce establishment
which is at the University but
not part of the University; it’s
a private organization.
If you can afford a postcard
it might help the cause to write

sity, Bronx, N Y., and nominate

Would you believe that not
a single Jew is represented
there? Neither Asser lievy, who
defied the authorities in Dutch
New Amsterdam, who said that
a Jew shouldn’t be trusted to
stand guard. Nor Commodore
Uriah Levy who struggled for
years to eliminate thrashing
from the United States Navy.
Nor Haym Solomon who help
ed underwrite the Revolution.
Nor Isaac Mayer Wise, or
Stephen Wise, two magnificent

It won’t be long, according to
Mordechai Karniel, before the
Golan Heights becomes home to
several thousand Jewish fam
ilies, before its ample waters
and rich red soil make a sig
nificant contribution to the Is
raeli economy and before such
garden spots as Maynot Ha-
baniass, the source of the
Baniass River, become famed
health and recreation resorts.
To Karniel to most Israelis, it is
simply impossible even to sug
gest that the Golan Heights,
once part of the kingdom over
which David and Solomon ruled,
will not forever be part of Is
rael.
