Mayor, Herman L Mazursky
of Bwnwell, 45. W», died
Thursday, Aug. 18. * ’
Graveside services were held
August 14 in the Barnwell Coun
ty Memorial - Cemetery with
Rabbi Norman Goldberg of
Augusta officiating.
Mr. Mazursky, elected mayor
in 1938, was the oldest mayor
in point of service in j South Ca
rolina, with 32 years in office.
He was a member of the Barn
well Town Council four years
before being named mayor.
From 1953 until his death, Mr.
Mazursky was a partner in the
law firm of Brow*, Jeffries and
Mazursky.
In 1964, he was presented with
an outstanding service awa^d by
the South Carolina Municipal
Assn, upon his 25th anniversary
as Barnwell mayor.
Mr. Mazursky was bom in
Williston,) S. ’ C., the son of the
late Barnett and Rachel Mazur
sky. He graduated from Staun
ton Military Academy in Vir
ginia, received his LLB degree
from the University of Virginia
and was a member of Zeta Beta
Tau fraternity.
In 1953, Mr. Mazursky was
named “Outstanding Citizen” by
the Barnwell Jaycees. He was
a Mason and a charter member
of the Barnwell Lions Club.
During World War JJ he served
on the Barnwell County Draft
Board, and Was listed in “Who’s
Who in South and Southwest”

gregation of the Children of Is
rael in Augusta.
Survivors include his wife,
Mrs. Louise Vaughan Mazursky;
two daughters, Paula Vaughan

NEW YORK (JtA)—The re
tirement of Dr. Joseph J.
Schwartz, vice president of the
Israel Bond Organization, has
been ahnounced here by the or
ganization’s president, Abraham
Feinberg. Dr. Schwartz was
chief executive officer of the
bond drive for 15 years during
which 1.5 billion was raised
through bond sales for Israel’s
economic development.
Dr. Schwartz, who is 71, said
in a statement issued that he was
relinquishing his post after 15
years of “rigorous duties” ad
ministering the operations of
Israel' bond drives in some 35
countries.
He said he was confident that
the organization would be able
“to carry on in the spirit and
with the effectiveness which
have enabled the Israel Bond
Organization to grow into the
central source of investment
funds for the development of the
country.” No successor .has been
announced.
Before joining the Bond Or
ganization, Dr. Schwartz served
as executive vice chairman of
the United Jewish Appeal. He
had also served, after World
War n, as overseas chief of the
Joint Distribution Committee
and was responsible for direct

Mrs. Kent, retired from the
State Department in Washington,

Monte Kent of Englewood,
Calit, and a sister, Mrs. Jeanette
•Goodman of Atlanta.
