THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE
Pag* Fhra
during the year, it was between
whites and blacks and not be
tween Christians and Jews. In
5730, British Jews finally made
up their minds to participate in
the effort to promote better re
lations between Negroes and
whites. We now have here over
a million Negroes, twice as
many as Jews, and race relations
are becoming a problem.
The argument as to whether
Jews as Jews, as distinct from
Jews as citizens, should or
should not participate in this
national effort was resolved
with an affirmative answer.
Here credit should be given to
Sir Samuel Fisher, senior Vice-
President of the Board and a
noted municipal leader.
There are few Jews here who
would advocate standing by and
doing nothing while the great
argument, accompanied not only
by Mr. Enoch Powell’s orations
but also by some violence, goes
on. However, human nature
being what it is, there is no
noticeable enthusiasm among
British Jews to actually throw
themselves into this battle. Of
500 rabbis, who had been ask
ed to report reactions in this
field, only 50 took the trouble
to reply . . . But the commun
ity as a whole stood up to be
counted. This at least can be
said.
The Parliamentary elections
last June, well within 5730, have
p r o d u ced thirty-one Jewish
members of Parliament on the
Labour side and 9 on the Con
servative—or Tory—side. There

wanted to be like that pussycat,
who went to town to see the
Queen, and only a few man

dream ... I should add that Sir
Isaac Wolfson, the President of
the United Synagogue, acquitted
himself well as the Queen’s
host. He gave her a lovely Bible,
which was both nice and fitting.
No society is free of anti-Sem
itism as long as it has Jews
in its midst. But British society
is freerer than most. There
were no problems of anti-Sem
itism or discrimination to speak
of in the year under scrutiny.

were never so many Jewish Con
servatives in the House. This is
more a matter for those inter
ested in Jewish statistics than a
practical achievement. The forty
Jewish members of the House
were elected as citizens, as Eng
lishmen, not as Jews. There is
no Jewish electoral power in
this country, what with less
than one percent of Jews in the
United Kingdom. And we don’t
even have an electoral college
in which Golders Green might
have more members than Wigan.
Our Queen is not elected . . .
Naturally, some of the Jews
in Parliament—there are more
Lords, too—will speak with more
Jewish fervor on the Middle
East than others. This is a mat
ters of temperament in the first
place. But at the end of the day,
as Harold Wilson says, other
forces will decide. Besides, Bri
tain’s influence is not what it
used to be.
Perhaps it is another sign of
the absence of anti-Semitism in
its explicit form—less than one
percent Jews; nearly seven per
cent Jewish members of the
elected chamber of Parliament,
the House of Commons . . .

Tanks For Peace
WASHINGTON (JTA) — The
United States appeared to be
trading arms to Israel for a
softer stand on Egyptian viola
tions of the Suez Canal stand
still cease-fire agreement. That
was the interpretation placed by
knowledgeable sources here on
the disclosure Friday that the
U. S. has agreed to supply Is
rael with a hefty arms package
that includes more F-4 Phantom
jets and 180-200 modern tanks,
among them the main battle line
M-60s which the U. S. Army re
gards as the best tank in service
anywhere in the worid. The im
pending new arms shipment to
Israel was confirmed by Penta

the weaponry was intended to
maintain the Middle East arms
balance by off-setting the heavy
Egyptian missile bujld^up in the
standstill cease-fire zone.
