PANORAMA by David Schwartz
Marriage Boom on West Bank
The moshav idea, combining the
beat features of individualism
and socialism, may be the hap
py solution for many of the eco
nomic troubles of today.

According to some reports out
of Israel, there has been a
strange marriage boom on the
West Bank. Israeli Arabs now,
much more than in the past, are
choosing their brides, not from
the Arab girls in Israel but of
the occupied territory.
This seems at first thought to
reflect on the Israeli Arab girls.
What is the matter with them?
Haven’t they got what it takes?
The experts, however, say that
this is not the case. The Arab
father demands a “dowry" for
himself, for the bride, and the
Israeli Arabs, economically bet
ter off, have raised the price
for their daughters. So the
Israeli Arabs go to the occupied
area, where the cost of brides
is cheaper. But the economic sit
uation in the occupied area is
improving too and this involves
a hazard of an inflation which
will price marriage out of exis
tence.
Maybe they can institute a
plan for buying the bride on the
installment plan.
THE FUNNY RUSSIANS
Sometimes we wonder if a
joke is ever heard in the Krem
lin. At any rate, Soviet Russia
does not seem to have any Mark
» Twtains or present day Sholom
Aleichems. But the Russians are
funny enough in their own way.
For instance, this past week, the
New York Times carried an ar
ticle by Aaron Vergellis, editor
of Sovietish Heimland, a Yid
dish publication in Moscow,
coming to the defense of the
Soviet Union. He writes that
very few Russian Jews want to
emigrate to Israel, and those
who want to can go but not, he
aays» bj;. hijacking airplanes.
suppose that Ihoae Jews
allegedly trying to bljack a
, plane could have done so very
easily if they had applied.
And if that is not funny
enough, consider the trial of the
so-called hijackers, with almost
jevery one confessing. The sys
tem of confessing guilt is an old
one in Russia.
Does the Soviet government
really believe that anyone is so
naive as to believe in these vol
untary confessions?
The Russian government must
have thought itself that this was
too funny That is why it didn’t
permit any foreign correspond
ents at the trial. It didn’t want
to see them laughing their heads
off.
FIT TO PRINT
The New York Times proudly
boasts of publishing “all the
news fit to print.”
But it left out one little item
which we think fit to print. We
learned about it in a Jerusalem
paper. The story was about the
grandchildren of the publisher
of the Times coming this sum
mer to spend the season in an
Israeli kibbutz.
The widow of Arthur Hayes
Sulzberger was in Jerusalem the
past week and herself is au
thority for the story. In an in-

terview with the Jerusalem
Post, Mrs. Sulzberger admitted
that her family had undergone
a complete turnabout on the
subject of Israel. Her late hus
band, she said, one time even re
fused to make a contribution to
the Joint Distribution Commit
tee unless they assured him that
none of the money would go for
Israel. But now, she says, “we
are all for Israel.”
THE MOSHAVIM
If we study the history of
Zionism, we find there are two
schools of thought. The latter
day Zionist spoke of it as a so
lution to the Jewish problem.
The earlier school—that of the
prophets—seemed to have had a
different opinion. They spoke of
the restoration of the nation, to
be sure, as a happy thing for
the Jew, but there is something
else. Many people of all the
nations shall go to Israel and
learn of its ways, says the Bible.
Maybe the earlier school was
right. Anyway, it was an
nounced a few days ago that
two countries are planning to
copy the moshav farming sys
tem. As is well known, the farm
system in Israel is two-fold.
There is the collective, the kib
butz and there is the moshav.
The latter is individualistic,
but it has some cooperative fea
tures. For example, the individ
ual small farmer is usually not
in a position to purchase tractors
and other expensive farm ma
chinery. So for the moshav
these are cooperatively owned
and there are cooperative agen
cies for disposing of the farm
products.
This past week, the Ambassa
dor of the Philippine Islands to
Israel announced that his coun
try plans to adapt the moshav
principle for not less than
500,000 acres and the govern
ment of Ghana also announced
that it plans to introduce an ex
periment of the moshav idea.
