You're almost here.
Don't look for signs. There

Synagogues are not the only
sights to see in the Mea Shearim.
Mrs. Hadassah Plaut, shopping
consultant, guided us on a dif

sightseeing tour
in that unusual
quarter of Jer

First we visit

the Persian an

Not all of his
wares were
antiques. Most!
of them were!
old, h o w -
ever. They came from vari
ous parts of the Orient and
North Africa, as well as a few
from Europe. He had candle
sticks, hanging lamps, menorahs,
bowls, pitchers, whatever might
have been fashioned of copper,
pewter or brass, and while his
store looked more like a junk
shop at first glance an antique
buff would surely have a ball
in it.
We had a ball there ourselves,
not so much because of the mer
chandise as because of the deal
er. A real character, he gave us
a running commentary on each
item in question as he brewed
the ubiquitous Turkish coffee
and sipped it with us.
Across the street another Per

on ivory or shell, necklaces and
other bangles used as amulets
by the bedouins, Yemenite cere

treasure trove of exotic para
phernalia for the ladies. Al
though his finer pieces obviously
were priced accordingly we did
see a surprising number of
tempting items which, both in
cost and in size, seemed perfect
ly suited to taking home as gifts.
Leaving the Mea Shearim and
continuing into downtown Jeru
salem, we poked into more fas
cinating shops specializing in the

and post cards; Yonit for coins
and medals; K. Meyer which de

The highlight of the day came
when Mrs. Plaut led us into an
attractive boutique in a very
poor section that was on the
border of Jordanian-held Jeru

jewelry, bags, stuffed toys, table
linens, dishes, tiled tables — all
are professionally styled to keep
up with the market and priced
competively rather than as an
appeal to charity.
Imagine our excitement when
we learned that this was the
place we had heard of from sev
