fare Board staff, Herbert Mill-
man, executive vice president of
JWB, stated:
“Herman Lebovitz, who has
served with great distinction
with JWB as community consul
tant for the past five years, has
accepted the invitation to serve
as the executive director of the
Jewish Community Center in
Akron, Ohio.
“While the loss to. JWB is a
great one, we are very pleased
that Herman has been chosen
for this important executive po
sition in the field of Jewish
communal service.
“He will assume his new re
sponsibilities on August 1.”
Mr. Lebovitz is currently co-

QUESTION: Why Is it that the
main body of prayer (the 19
benedictions — the Shmoneh
Esreh) is not repeated by the
cantor at the evening services
as it is at the morning and after
noon service?
ANSWER: The evening ser
vice does not have the same
kind of requirement as the
morning and afternoon services.
While the morning and after
noon services correspond direct
ly to the regular morning and
afternoon sacrifices which were
offered in the Temple of old,
the evening service does not
correspond to any regular of
fering of sacrifices, since sacri
fices were not offered in the
evening in the Temple of old.
However, since the parts that
were offered as sacrifices in
the afternoon were still burning
or smoldering _ on the altar in
the evening, we still retain the
tradition of having a regular
evening service. In order to es
tablish the difference in charac
ter between the evening service
and the morning and afternoon
services, the cantor’s repetition
of the prayer benedictions is
omitted.
QUESTION: Why is it that on
Friday nights the cantor repeats
the benedictions in an abbrevi
ated version?

ANSWER: Some authorities
claim (Tur, orach Chiam, 268)
that this was instituted to pro
long the service so that late
comers might be able to catch
up with the congregation while
the cantor is offering this brief
repetition. This was also insti
tuted because of the danger that
used to exist in returning home
from the synagogue at night If
the late comers could catch up
they would have company on
the way home.
