THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE
Jap Jewess Tops Billing
For Progressive Club July 31
Members and guests at the
Progressive Club are eying Sat
urday night, July 31, when the
evening’s artist will be Marie
Misakura of Japan,
What’s unusual about Marie is
that she is a Japanese Jew . . .
Hebrew name Miriam . . . who
sings in French, English, Italian,
Spanish, Russian, Turkish and
Japanese, and in Hebrew and
Yiddish,
The diminutive (5 feet tall, 95
pounds) beauty not only sings,
but her one-woman show in
cludes comedy and piano artis
try. She has appeared on tele
vision on the Johnny Carson
Show, Ed Sullivan show and
others, as well as in night clubs,
resorts and for Jewish organ-
ciety J in New York.
Marie, whose father was in the
export-import business in Kobe,
Japan and whose mother was a
teacher, is a Jewess by choice.
About ten years ago the whole
family, father, mother, two sis
ters and a brother, converted to
Judaism. She became an active
member of the Japanese Jewish
Temple in Tokyo, to which she
contributes 10 per cent of her
income, calling it “my God
money.” She also serves as pres
ident of the Japanese-Jewish So-
izations.

"Plaza Suile"
At TOTS
Packing 'em In
The combination of funnyman
Paul Lynde and playwright Neil
Simon’s smash hit “Plaza Suite,”
has led Theater of the Stars to
schedule an unprecedented eight
performances of the show in one
week.
In addition to the regular
Sunday matinee on July 25 at
3 p.m., 2 o’clock Saturday mati
nee has been added on July 24.
Evening performances through
Sunday night are at 8:30.
“Plaza Suite,” actually three
one-act plays linked together
because each is set in the same
sumptuous suite in the elegant
Manhattan hotel, was the
seventh in the prolific Simon’s
string of hits. Appearing with
Mr. Lynde in each segment is
Elizabeth Allen.
Lynde is one of the most in-,
demand guests on television, his
appearances ranging from
“Hollywood Squares” to “The
Munsters.”
Following “Plaza Suite,”
TOTS brings in vivacious Carol
Lawrence in “The Unsinkable
Molly Brown,” the rip-roaring
musical about the real American
couple who struck it rich. Star
ring with Miss Lawrence will be
Harve Pressnell who played
this role on Broadway with
Tammy Grimes.
Ticket Information can be had
by calling 525-0681.
