Beatitiful opera star Patrice
Munsel lends her not inconsider
able talent to the lilting gaiety
of the Strauss waltzes for
Theater of the Stars’ fourth at
traction “The Great Waltz.”
With a score made of such fa
miliar melodies as “The Blue
Danube” and “Tales from the Vi
enna Woods,” works by both
Strausses Johann Sr. and Johann
Jr,, the music could well be call
ed a hit parade of a hundred
years.
The libretto, adapted bv Moss
Hart from a Viennese original,
tells of the rivalry between the
two celebrated composers, father
and son, for the title of “Waltz
King.”
Miss Munsel brings her haunt
ing beauty and rich lovely voice
to the role of the Russian Count
ess who ensures young Strauss’s
chance to be heard.
When she made her debut with
the Metropolitan Opera, Patrice
Munsel, at 17, was the youngest
singer ever to do so. In addition
to her opera career, she has been
guest artist on most major tele
vision variety shows, specials and
dramatic shows. On the musical
comedy stage she has been es
pecially acclaimed for her per
formances in “Kiss Me Kate,”
“Can-Can,” “South Pacific,” The
King and I,” “My Fair Lady,” and
others.
Performances of “The Great
Waltz” are nightly through Satur
day at 8:30 p. m., with a Sunday
matinee at 3 p. m. Tickets and
information oan be had by calling
525-0681.
Following “Waltz,” Joel Grey
recreates the role in “Cabaret”
which won him the Tony Award
on Broadway. The show, built on
the decadence of 1930 Berlin, re
captures the frenzied spirit of
Berlin on the eve of the Nazi
take-over.
