About the Rite of Brith Milah
. Jewish law requires the presence of a duly certified
and qualified mohel to perform the rite of circumcision.
Brith Milah is more than a surgical procedure; it is
a profound religious moment in which a child is ushered
into the covenant—or Brith—with G-d and the people
Israel. As such, It cart be performed only by a religiously
trained and fully observant Jew. It should be clearly
understood that the presence of a rabbi at a circumcision
performed by a physician does not validate the Brith. A
Brith requires a mohel.
** ’Atlanta has for many years had two mohelim. Al
though Cantor Pincus Aloof has left the community, we
still have the services of Rev. Max Kleinmann as a mohel.
If he is not available, there are mohelim in Birmingham,
Jacksonville, Augusta, or Savannah, who would be willing
to come to Atlanta to perform the Brith. Every effort
should be expended to see to it that a new-born baby is
given the privilege of being ushered into Judaism in the
proper way.

A Poem Dedicated "To Hassidic Rabbis
IN THE HOME OF SENIOR RABBIS
' By WOLF PASMANIK
Born—like all humans,
BTOught up as devout Jews;
aok possession— £ .
id Torah-r-in their pure hands;
Imbued with faith and high praises,
Their spirits soar high;
Their eyes turn upwards
To God the Eternal.
+**
God, do Thou grant strength and years,
So that they may ascend and be uplifted unto Thee.
They study Thine Torah
Day and night;
They undergo tribulations,
Become strengthened in faith,
Knowing that Thou are One and the Truth,
That all that exists depends on Thy Might.
Translated from the Yiddish by the noted
writer and publicist, Moshe Starkman, president
of the Yiddish PEN Club.
JERUSALEM (JTA) — Some
70,000 Israelis and tourists
gathered here Saturday for the
annual Tisha b’Av observance at
the Western Wall, commemorat
ing the destruction of the Second
Temple 1901 years ago.
Since the ninth of Av occurred
on the Sabbath this year, the
fast was observed from yester
day sundown to sundown. Places
of entertainment, cafes and res
taurants were closed throughout
the country last night and banks
and government offices were
closed today.
Thousands of Israelis and tour
ists attended synogogue services
and an atmosphere of mourning
prevailed. Visitors at the West
ern Wall gathered in groups to
read the Book of Lamantations
CCAR To Study
Mixed Marriages
NEW YORK (JTA) — The
Central Conference of American
Rabbis announced a research
program to determine the Jew
ish commitment of mixed mar
riages and the Jewish education
provided by the parents for the
children of such unions. Officials
of the Reform rabbinic associ
ation in the United States and
Canada stressed that the recent
debate at the group’s ’82nd an
nual convention in St. Louis
June 21-24 in no way altered
the CCAR’s stand regarding
such marriages which is that
they are “contrary to Jewish
tradition and should therefore
be discouraged.”
Those favoring a stronger
CCAR position, argue that the
children of mixed marriages at
best receive a minimal Jewish
education and that the commit
ment tor Judaism 'in'such homes
remains peripheral. They fur
ther argue that by officiating at
such ceremonies the rabbi mere
ly salves the religious conscience
of the couple to satisfy parents
and grandparents. It is esti
mated that 100 Reform rabbis
officiate at mixed marriages.
Those favoring more leniency
are concerned that disappointed
couples will be “turned away
completely from Judaism and
Jewish identity.

TORAH RADIO
FROM CYPRUS
TEL AVIV (JTA) _ A group
of Orthodox Israelis aided by re
ligious elements abroad are
planning ‘Torah Radio” broad
casts into Israel from Cyprus
The group complained that
K°1 Israel Israel’s State-owned
radio station, provides almost no
tune for religious broadcasts
and that the radio management
follows “an extremely anti-re
ligious policy.”
Representatives of the groijp
plan to negotiate in Cyprus with
a station there for several hours
of religious
week.

Others came to the Wall to meet

carnage of 70 CE.
Among the mourners was the
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State
Joseph J. Sisco, who arrived in
Israel on Thursday for about a
week of political consultations
with Israeli leaders.
All political activities here, in
cluding the Sisco discussions and
weekly Cabinet meeting, were
cancelled for the duration of the
fast, as Tisha b’Av is considered
in Israel — even in some non-
Orthodox circles t— as a national
day of mourning. But the ultra-
Orthodox issued a call for a
mass demonstration last night in
the Zichron Moshe quarter to
protest autopsies.
The called-for rally came in
the wake of the State Comptrol
ler’s report that 3243 autopsies
were conducted in hospitals
across the country in recent
months.

Dr. Kritzecv remarked that
“The Christian church would be
satisfied with a say-so in the
administration of the Holy
Places.” Father Rayan observed
that “the question of the Holy
Places shoould be considered in
the light of the whole city of
Jerusalem.” Congressmen ques
tioning the witnesses sought to
establish the relative importance
of Jerusalem to each of the
three faiths. Rabbi Tanenbaum
observed that “All three faiths
have a deep interest in Jerus
alem and its environs” but he
cautioned against “equating one
and the .same thing to Jews,
Christians and Moslems.”
He said, “Judaism has no
Rome, no Geneva, no Mecca, no
Medina—only Jerusalem. It is
an entirely necessary and in-
despensable part of Judaism as
it is not for Christianity and
Moslems. That is why there is
•so much feeling on the part of
the Jews all over the world - for
it.” Rep. James G. Fulton
(R. Pa.) responded that he had
visited the Wailing Wall and
saw the “intensity of the feel
ing” of the Jews there
