VACATION
The best part of a vacation
is that it takes you out of
doors.
Remember the story about the
angel’s visit to Methuselah?
Methuselah was stretched out
on the ground as the angel
zoomed down. The angel look
ed sort of disappointed.
“Angel, Your Highness,” said
Methuselah, I always thought
angels had smiles on their faces.
How come you look like
that?”
“How do you expect me to
look,” said the angel, “when I
come passing and see you
stretched out on the jjround.
Ain’t you got no self-respect.
You are five hundred years old
and you haven’t got a house. You
lie on the ground. You ought
to show a better example to

your neighbors. Why don’t you
build yourself a home like a
nice, solid citizen is supposed
to have?”
“Well, I have thought of it,”
said Methuselah, “but I dunno.
How much longer have I got
to live, Angel, Your Highness?”
“Well, as to that,” said the
angel, “I am in a position to
give you definite information. I
, just happen to have your rec
ord with me. Yes, here it is. It
says, Methuselah will live longer
than any man in the world.
You will make it to the thou
sand mark. So you have five
hundred more years.”
“H’m,” said Methuselah, “for
just five hundred years it’s
hardly worth building a house.”
Houses are a kind of addic
tive drug. They offer some ad
vantages, but a great many dis
advantages. They segregate peo
ple. In the open, we all belong
to the same family and houses
are physically unhealthy. One
physician confided that he loses
half of his practice in the sum
mer when people are outdoors
more. The birds don’t catch cold
living in the open. If you tell
a bird about Medicare, he
laughs and says, Medicare,
Schmedicare. Abi gesund.”
Another value of vacation is
that it takes you away from
what you are doing. You can
stand so close to a thing, you
don’t see it. Watch a painter at
his canvas. From time to time,
he will get away from it and
look at it from a distance. He
knows that when standing close,
he may see an individual part,
but he becomes blind to the
whole picture. It’s the relation
of forms and colors to each
other that determines whether
it’s a good picture, not any
single feature. From a distance,
he can see the whole picture.
Vacations start with the week
ly Shabbat day of rest. The
Jews made a big thing out of
it. A special tablecloth usually
adorns the Shabbat table. And
Jews put on their best clothes.
The Shabbat was the pause that
gave him the opportunity to
think about his whole life in
perspective. The Jew even spoke
of a new soul that entered him
on the Shabbat. Without the
Shabbat, the Jew probably
would not have survived.
When the Jews were driven
into captivity, other people
began to get the idea. The thing
the Romans first noted about
the Jews was that one day a
week, they didn’t work. It was
regarded as revolutionary. Some
upper class Romans strongly
objected to it. No less a person
than Seneca complained that the

Jews spent one seventh of their
time in idleness. When Chris
tianity won out in Rome, the
Christians took over the idea,
but they changed the rest day
to Sunday. When the Moslems
took over, they changed the
rest day to Friday.
Now, in western countries,
we have two rest days in the
week, Saturday and Sunday.
And there are other rest days,
July 4th, Thanksgiving, Armis
tice Day and so on. And besides,
there are the coffee breaks
during work days. The other
day a woman kissing her hus
band as he was leaving for
work, said, “Joe, better hurry,
or you will be late for the cof
fee break.”
Yes, vacation is a wonderful
thing, but let us not forget that
there is also something to be
said for a little work now and
then. Rabbi Ber of Radeschitz
once met an old friend, he had
not seen since his childhood
days. “How are you getting
along?” he asked.
“I will tell you, Berel,” said
the old timer, “I have found
that what you don’t work out
for yourself, you don’t have.”
