gray-clad soldier kept guard
over the 100-strong group of
men and women at Kloten Air
port near Zurich. The group
did not stand still. The men and
even more the women kept
snapping the scene: the blue-
and-white- colored El A1 Boeing,
the airport control tower in the
far distance other aircraft near
by—but not too near.
“Is he one of ours?” one of the
American women asked excited
ly. “But no he is Swiss,” came
the reply.
"Exciting, isn’t it?” a male
voice said. “As for me, I find it
frightening,,” a tall, dark-haired
woman replied.
Immediately the woman, Mrs.
Sylvia Nosatsky from Queens,
New York, on her way to Israel
on behalf of the American Jew

Israel dialogue, found herself
the target of vehement attack
from several Israelis in the
group of waiting passengers. “I

not all the time.” Unfortunately,
the conversation was cut short
by the call to begin boarding the
plane.
El Al’s security measures are
more stringent than those of
other airlines. Boarding a Pan
American airliner in Boston one
is no more than frisked a little
and asked to open one’s brief
case or handbag. No visible
precautions at all were taken as
we changed over to a Swissair
Coronado in London—although
a plane of exactly the same type
was the only aircraft ever blown
up in midair by Arab terrorists.
All passengers and crew mem
bers were killed in that explo
sion over Switzerland.
But El A1 is different. Before
boarding one is asked if one car
ries any presents from anyone
unknown to the passenger. The
cabin luggage is minutely ex
amined. Transistor radios are
opened to see if they really are
what they seem to be. The
liquor bought from the duty
free shop is taken away from
the passenger and carried
through a pressure chamber to
make sure that one of the
bottles is not a Molotov cock
tail. After checking in, the
passengers in the departure
lounge are asked not to lose
sight, even for a moment, of the
clothing and pieces of luggage
brought into the plane. Eventu
ally they are not frisked but
searched thoroughly and pains
takingly by Swiss security po
lice, men and women in separate
cabins and each by a man or a
woman agent, as the case may
be—perhaps a necessary ordeal
in the age of air piracy, but an
ordeal nonetheless.
There is consolation only in
the friendliness of Nahva the
air hostess, who never seems to
rest during the entire four-hour
flight; of Yissrael the steward,
who will bring another and yet
another cup of coffee if you ask
for it. The advantages outweigh
the difficulties: all El A1 flights
to Europe and the U.S. are
booked solid for months ahead.
