The Good That A Woman Does
Can Inspire Others To Emulate
Last spring, Atlanta Hadassah recognised the extraordinary
service career of Mrs. Louis J. Levitas with its coveted
Myrtle Award. At the time, this special tribute was written
by a young lady who was the perceptive editor of her
high school newspaper rive years ago. Miss Streve,
her college training behind her, is now back at Grady High,
this time as an English teacher. —THE EDITOR

terns can discover that many of
the mores of our young gener
ation are merely repetitious of
an extremely liberal romantic
period which swept Europe dur
ing the late eighteenth and early
nineteenth centuries.
History can re-occur in many
ways, but most often we find
such repetition through the dup
lication of personalities. Unique
individuals seem to “rise into
the ranks” that martyrs and pa
triots have set before them and
we find ourselves saying, “That

By ordinary standards you are rat
ed a success. Yet you know that in
your present position you will never
have the opportunity to show what
you can really do and earn.
Today, due to expansion of business,
we can offer you an opportunity to
fellow could be another Ken
nedy one day. He has the same
qualities.” This of course, is the
way of the world: excellence
must succeed itself in order for
it to suffocate mediocrity. We
must look for our modern day
patriarchs and matriarchs, for
without them, we have no guid
ing light, no example to follow.
This imitative quality of his
tory’s is not a recent thing. Ever
since man came into being we
have had stereotypes which ap
pear with each generation. The
Bible is the mast accurate of
references to this. As early as
the days of King Soloman, a
proverb was written about the
perfect woman and her duties
as wife, mother and community
worker. If one doesn’t document
his reading carefully, we could
come to mistake this proverbial
woman as one of the winners of
this year’s Myrtice Wreath
Award, Mrs. L. J. Levitas. .
Hadassah could choose no
more perfect a recipient for
this grand honor, for Ida re
peats history; she represents all
the good and decent qualities we
find in a great people through
out the centuries. She is the
everlasting light of our heritage
and she passes along a little of
her warmth to everyone she
knows
King Lemuel once said, “Who
can find a virtuous woman? for
her price is far above rubies . . .
She girdeth her loins with
strength, and strengthened her
arms.” Strong is not a very fem
inine adjective, and yet as it
applies to the woman of Pro
verbs 31, it applies to Ida
Levitas. Mrs. Levitas never
ceases to amaze her friends and
family with her abundant
amount of energy. She is always
there to aid the communiy, be
it through her “convincing man
ner” on the telephone or her
endless bus excursions to visit
and befriend her fellow man.
She is called by those who
know her, “Miss Hadassah” and
so she is. Her strength has
pushed Hadassah over fifty
years to its present heights. She
is a force in our community, an
ever present, positive force.
King Lemuel continues, “She
stretcheth out her hands to the
poor; yeah she reacheth forth
her hands to the needy. Strength
and honor ar# her clothing and
she shall rejoice 1 in time to
come. She openeth her mouth to
wisdom; and in her tongue is
the law of kindness. She look-
eth well to the ways of her
household and eateth not the
bread of idleness.
Idle is one adjective that can
not be applied to Ida. If she is
not spearheading a Hadassah
drive, it’s something for Bran
ded, Ahavath Achim Synagogue
or several other community or
ganizations. Mrs. Levitas’ good
ness extends far beyond organi
zational groups. She is always
on the go, baking and bringing
her famous mandel bread to
friends and acquaintances.
Ida Levitas, Atlanta loves you.
We thank you for your fifty
years of service. We commend
you on your well deserved rec
ognition. You are the matriarch
of our community, for you re
peat everything good in our her
itage.
