Mrs. Burton Epstein To Lead
1971 All-Israel Fashion Show
Mrs. Burton Epstein, promin
ent leader of women’s activities
on behalf of Israel and the local
Jewish community, has been
named chairman of the 19(71
All-Israel Fashion Show, which
will premiere in Atlanta on
Thursday, Sept. 30, at the Mar
riott Hotel.
The appointment was an
nounced this week by Mrs. Dave
Alterman and Mrs. Leon Froh-
sdn, who served as co-chairmen
of the high fashion event in
1970. The show is presented an
nually by the women’s division
of the Atlanta Israel Bond Com
mittee.
In a statement regarding the
appointment, Mrs. Alterman
and Mrs. Frohsin said they were
pleased to turn the reins over
to Mrs. Epstein, whose leader
ship and organizational qual
ities are admired by all who
know her.
"Sandra has consistently de
monstrated the ability to bring
people together and get things
done,” they said, “and we look
forward to working with her
for the success of the All-Israel
Fashion Show.”
Mrs. Epstein is national board
member of the United Jewish
Appeal and was named women’s
state chairman for UJA in 1970.
She has been chairman of sev
eral divisions of the Atlanta
Jewish Welfare Federation and
is closely identified with the
Young Matrons Division which
she helped pioneer.
A strong supporter of Israel,
Mrs. Epstein visited the Jewish
State in 1970. She has since ap
peared as a speaker before many
local groups, describing her im
pressions and helping to stimu
late a greater awareness of Is
rael’s pressing economic and
social needs.
Mrs. Epstein has announced
that the first organizational
meeting for members of the
Fashion Show Committee will be
held on Tuesday, August 31st,
at 1 p.m., at the home of Mrs.
Jack Geldbart, 1510 West Wes
ley Road, N.W. She said invita
tions have been mailed through
out the community and urged
all invited to be sure to attend
and help with the vital plan
ning for the show.

SCHEDULES
11 Trips Planned For
Operation Israel ’72
Atlanta Operation Israel 1972
has scheduled 11 trips, the first
beginning Nov. 14 and the last
ending Feb. 20, 1972. There are
trips for men only, trips for
women only, student trips, cou
ples trips, and on^ for physicians
and their wives.
Operation Israel flights take
participants behind the scenes
for a deeper, more penetrating,
more human look at the accom
plishments, problems and needs
of the people of Israel, and at
the United Jewish Appeal’s hu
manitarian programs.
There will be ample oppor-
frank dialogs with high ranking
Israeli officials. Among those
who have met with Operation
Israel groups in the past are the
prime minister, the chief of staff
of the Israel defense forces, the
ministers of defense, finance,
education, absorption, transpor
tation and interior, and the
chairman and the treasurer of
the Jewish Agency.
There will be ample appor-
tunity for mingling with Israelis
from all walks of life.
Gene Asher Heads
Life Underwriters
Gene Asher, who has long
been active in community and
mlitary affairs, is the new pres
ident of the Atlanta Association
of Life Underwriters.
Gene steps up after serving as
vice-president. He has been a
member of the Board of Di
rectors of the Atlanta Life Un
derwriters Association for the
past six years.
An agent for the National Life
of Vermont, he holds the char
tered life underwriter degree. In
each of the eight years he has
been in the life insurance busi
ness he has qualified for the
Million Dollar Round Table. He
also is a charter and repeating
member of the National Life of
Vermont’s Top 50 Club, com
prised of the top 50 agents of
his company.
A native of Atlanta, Gene was
graduated from old Tech High
School and the University of
Georgia. He served in the Ma
rine Corps during the Korean
War and has been in the Marine
Corps Reserve ever since. He is
president of the Atlanta Chap
ter, Marine Corps Reserve Offi
cers Association and holds the
rank of lieutenant colonel.
Gene has been a perennial
campaigner for the United Ap
peal and Jewish Welfare Fund.
He has long served on the Foot
ball Committee of the Scottish
Rite Crippled Children’s Hos
pital.
He is the son of Mrs. Baron H.
Asher and the late Mr. Asher.
He is married to the former Dell
Spector and is a member of the
Tfemple.
Participants will have an in
side view of such typically Is
raeli institutions as the immi
grant hostel, the kibbutz, and
the nahal settlement (a self-
sustaining para-military border
settlement). Each group will be
received at an army or air force
base.
The hallowed and historic
sites, the cultural centers and
the sights of modern Israel will
also be included.

Theodore R. Harris of Atlanta,
associated with the Georgia
State Department of Labor for
the past four years as a lead
system analyst, has moved to
Raleigh, N.C., to work with the
newly created Federal Govern
ment’s Environmental Protec
tion Agency.
He is the son of Dr. and Mrs.
Leroy S. Harris of Griffin. Har
ris received his bachelor’s de
gree from!, University of Georgia
in 1966 and his master’s degree
in management from Georgia
State University in 1969.
He received the certificate in
data processing in 1970 and will
be working with the EPA’s
computer time-sharing systems
and real time evaluation sys
tems.

The congregation picnic will
not have to rely on any hot lines
to the weatherman or other
wise, since the spread will take
place from 4 to 7, in the air-
conditioned social hall.

ABRAHAM CHEN
Abraham Chen has taken over
his duties as the associate regi
onal director for the Southeast-
tern Israel Aliyah Center in At
lanta.
Mr. Chen took a leave of ab
sence from his position with
Egged Bus Company to assume
his new post.
A native of Moshav Nahalal,
the first moshav in Israel, Mr.
Chen was bom in 1923. Upon
graduation from high school in
1941, he joined the noted Jew
ish Brigade of the British Army
and served with this unit until
the end of World War II.
After the war, he remained in
Europe and helped smuggle vic
tims of the Nazi holocaust into
Palestine in the Aliyah Bet.
During the War of Independ
ence, Mr. Chen served in the
Israel Defense Forces with the
rank of lieutenant. He also
served in the reserves and took
an active part in the wars of
1956 and 1967.
Mr. Chen married his wife
Maira in 1950. They have two
children and one grandchild.
