JEWISH
QUIZ BOX
By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX
QUESTION: Why are Jewish
prayers still recited in Hebrew?
ANSWER: While it is gener
ally agreed that man can ap
peal to the Almighty in any
language, - Hebrew has always
been the official language of
Jewish prayer. Maimonides, in
his Laws of Prayers, explains
this feature by explaining that
the insistence of praying in, He
brew has acted as a unifying
agent which synchronizes the
expressions of Jews the world
over. Maimonides explains that
when the rabbis observed that
the Jews were being dispersed
and that many forms of ex
pressions and many different
languages were prevalent, they
were convinced of the need for
a certain amount of consistency
and therefore composed the
basic prayers of the Jewish peo
ple in a clear lucid style. Jew
ish prayer is an experience in
which the Jew feels at one with
his people and with his history
behind him and his future
ahead of him. One of the fore
most vehicles used in accomp
lishing this unity in society and
in time is the use of the Hebrew
language.
QUESTION: Why do some
Jews rise on their toes when
reciting the “Kedusha” (Le., the
selected passages which sanctify
the Almighty)?
ANSWER: It is claimed by
the rabbis in the Midrash (Tan-
chuma) that Jews emulate the
angels when they sanctify the
Almighty. In this action, man
“rises’’ to the level of the angels
and hence, some rise on their
toes. In a sense, this experience
elevates man himself to spiritual
heights. After all, the Almighty
does not need man’s expressions
to sanctify Hint The recitation
of the Kedusha simply is an in
strument to benefit man by im
pressing him with the idea that
man is capable of rising to the
heights of sanctity.
QUESTION: Why are certain
verses in the prayer liturgy re
peated three times?
ANSWER: Repeating some
thing generally is a means of
emphasizing the matter. The
Talmud (Menachoth 65a) relates
that the messenger of the court
would repeat his message three
times. A medieval authority
(Maharil) explained that repe
tition safeguards against error.
Basically, certain key phrases or
verses were repeated three
times to emphasize their cer
tainty, to help us realize their
importance and to perhaps re
mind us that we are before the
heavenly court when we pray.
