National TEP to Move
Headquarters to
Atlanta
Following a three-year survey
by the Grand Council of Tau
Epsilon Phi fraternity, Atlanta
has been chosen as the new in
ternational headquarters. After
June 1, TEP headquarters will
be located at 1801 Piedmont
Rd, N. E.
Since its founding at Colum
bia University in 1910, the fra
ternity’s central offices had been
in New York. The decision, ac
cording to executive secretary
Sidney S. Suntag, who will re
locate his family in Atlanta, was
based primarily on the historic
strength and involvement of the
Atlanta alumni in the interna
tional affairs of the fraternity.
There are chapters at the Uni
versity of Georgia and Emory.
In the past 20 years, four At
lantans have served as interna
tional presidents. These are Jos
eph Ginburg, the late Isadore
Heiman, Mendel Romm Jr. and
Joe H. Gerson. At present, six
Georgians serve on national
boards: Harris Jacobs of At
lanta, international vice pres
ident; William Waronker of At
lanta, member-at-large of the
Abraham Sharir (1), Israel’s Southeastern Consul for Economic
Affairs, with Houston’s Israeli Consul General Benjamin Bonney,
World Trade Club president E. E. “Pat” Murphy and Gray
Wakefield, chairman of the International Business Committee of
the Houston Chamber of Commerce. Sharir spoke in Houston
at a special luncheon at the World Trade Club on "Israel's
Economy Today and the Outlook for the Future.”

JEWISH
QUIZ BOX
By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX
QUESTION: Why is it that the
worshipper bows for only the
first and the second from the
last blessing in the main body
of prayer while standing erect
for the other blessings?
ANSWER: The Talmud (Ber-
akoth 34A) cites this rule. The
Tosafot commentary advances
the theory that whatever man
does should be done with proper
measure. Even piety should be
expressed in proportion. Stand
ing * erect indicates man’s
dignity and instills confidence
in man telling him that he
can stand face to face with
the Creator. The bowed position
indicates man’s helplessness in
the face of the omnipotence of
the Almighty. Not bowing at all
is arrogance on the part of man
because it exhibits undue pride.
Bowing for every blessing is an
undue display of excessive piety
which is likewise considered an
act of arrogance on the part of
man who seems to be trying to
“show off” his piety.
The famous Rabbi Kook tried
to explain why it was that those
particular two blessings were
chosen for man to bow. He
claimed that the first blessing
speaks of the Patriarchs. In
mentioning them, the Jew
feels somewhat inferior to
their great heroic reverence
and thus, he bows to de
monstrate that he is not as
worthy as they were. The other
benediction at which the wor
shipper bows is the benediction
where man gives thanks to God
for the many gratuities which
God has bestowed upon him.
When he realizes all the good
that the Almighty has done for
him, man feels humble and
undeserving and thus bows in
gratitude to the Almighty’s
grace.
