USSR Orders 27
Activists to Duty
Arab Terrorists Hijack Belgian
Plane at Lod; Israelis Stage Rescue
LATE BULLETIN
TEL AVIV—Israeli paratroopers disguised as aircraft mech
anics rescued the 97 hostages, killing two Arab guerrillas, after
21 hours of suspense and terror. Two women hijackers were
captured, one of whom was rushed to a hospital. Also, six pas
sengers and two soldiers were wounded.
Lt. Gen. David Eleazar, Israeli Chief of Staff, said afterwards,
“If other countries acted the way we did, hijackings would stop.”
NEW YORK (JTA) — At
least 14 additional Jewish activ
ists have been ordered to report
for active duty in the Soviet
Army Reserves, it was reported
by the National Conference on
Soviet Jewry. The total is now
27.
Of the 14, one is from Moscow.
Leonid Kelner; one is from
Sverdlovsk, Mark Levin; 11 are
from Riga and one from Kovno.
The NCSJ also identified the
two activists ordered this week
end into active duty as Leonid
Tsypin and Prof. Aleksander
Voronel, both from Moscow.
Twenty-six of the activists are
in their 20’s while Prof. Voronel
is 41 years old.
At the same time, Richard
Maass, chairman of the NCSJ
reported that 20 Soviet Jewish
activists have received permis
sion to emigrate, “We in the
United States are overjoyed for
those allowed to leave,” he said,
“but we fear for the well being
of Soviet Jews remaining, and
particularly for those who have
already been drafted or notified
that they will be called up. This
present wave of punishing activ
ists prior to President Nixon's
visit can only be Interpreted as
a substitution of military service
for imprisonment.”
Maass also stated that Levin’s
wife, Anna, has expressed fears
that her husband may be de
tained even further in the Sov
iet Union after his two-year
term of service is completed.
According to common Soviet
practice Maass observed, Levin
will then have had access to
Russian military technology.
Meanwhile, the Student Strug
gle for Soviet Jewry reported
that the Moscow regional mili
tary commander warned the
parents of Gavriel Shapiro that
unless he reported for military
induction at 9 a m. May 10 he
was to be tracked down and
put on trial.
Shapiro is one of the Jewish
activists in Moscow who was
ordered to report for military
duty since applying for exit
visas to go to Israel. Shapiro
and others have been in hiding
but Soviet authorities apparent
ly know' where to find them,
the SSSJ said.
According to the SSSJ, six
Moscow families have renounced
their Soviet citizenship as a ges
ture of suport of the men
ordered into military service.'
TEL AVIV (JTA) — Three
armed Arab terrorists held 90
passengers and 10 crew mem
bers of a hijacked Belgian Sa-
bena airliner hostage at Lydda
Airport Monday as they bar
gained with Israeli officials
over the radio for the release of
Arab terrorists imprisoned in
Israel The terrorists threatened
to blow up the plane and all
aboard unless their demands
were met. About 45 of the pas
sengers are believed to be Is
raelis and other Jews.
Defense Minister Moshe Dayan
and Army Chief of Staff David
Eleazar arrived at the airport
shortly after the plane landed
at 7 p.m. local time. The Bel
gian Ambassador was also pres-
sent as a Sabena official com
municated with the terrorists
via radio in the Lydda Airport
control tower.
Israel’s Transport Minister
Shimon Peres was at the air
port. He said the terrorists pre
sented a “long list” of names
of prisoners they want released.
The number was not disclosed.
Efforts were being made to per-
ado thr- -Ifijackers to release
the passengers. But by 11 p.m.
local time, apparently no prog
ress was made.
Tho plane was hijacked Mon
day afternoon after it took off
from Vienna on the second stage
of a Brussels-Tel Aviv flight. It
was not certain whether the
terrorists, who claimed to be
members of the Palestinian
Black September organization,
boarded the. Boeing 707 jet at
Brussels or Vienna There was
no armed guard on the plane.
The airliner was shunted to a
side runway where it was bathed
in floodlights and surrounded
by police, security forces, am
bulances and fire-fig h t i n g
equipment.
Israeli troop re-enforcements
were rushed to the scene. They
blocked all roads leading to
Lydda Airport, letting through
only ticket-holding passengers.
But traffic at the airport was
reported normal. During the
evening hours most flights are
incoming.
The Black September organ
ization is an offshoot of Dr.
George Habash’s Popular Front
for the Liberation of Palestine.
It has claimed responsibility for
several hijacks, most recently
that of a Lufthansa jombo jet
which it held for ransom.
JDL Invades
Rumania Back to Old Line
Despite Visit of Meir
JERUSALEM (JTA) — Ru
mania Monday night reaffirmed
its position that a Middle East
peace settlement requires the
total withdrawal of Israeli for
ces from the occupied Arab
territories. That view was con
tained in a statement attributed
to President Nicolae Ceausescu
which was broadcast by Bucha
rest radio only hours after Pre
mier Colda Meir returned to
Israel from her three-day visit
to Rumania.
Officials here would not com
ment on the broadcast hut
stressed that the Rumanian po
sition was well-known and was
spelled out by Ceausescu and
Premier Ion Gheorghe Maurer
during Mrs. Meir’s visit. It was
not contained in the joint com
munique released Sunday sim
ultaneously in Jerusalem and
Bucharest.
That communique stressed the
cordial atmosphere that attended
Mrs. Meir’s visit and the desire
for continuing close bilateral
relations between Israel and
Rumania. On international mat
ters, including the Middle East
conflict, the joint statement re
sorted to generalities.
The Ceausescu statement was
broadcast immediately follow
ing the reading of the text of
the joint communique. It said
that the Middle East problem
should be settled within the
framework of the Security
Council’s Resolution 242 which
Rumania regards as calling for
the total withdrawal of Israeli
forces from the Arab territories
occupied in 1967. It also said
that Rumania counts the Pales
tinians among the nations en
titled to self determination.
El A1 Official Reveals Expansion
Plans for Blue T erminal at KAF
Bv ADOLPH ROSF1NRFRO
Things are still "on tho up"
for El A1 Israel Airlines. The
pun intended refers to the selec
tion of the Ivrit "El Al” as the
name of the service in the first
place. The phase means liter
ally and figuratively "on the
up.” And a more appropriate
“shorn" for a Hebraistic airlines
could hardly be conjured up.
No matter, Monachim Cohen,
chief of thi' North and South
American set-up, in Atlanta re
cently revealed that the con
tinued increase in passengers is
necessitating the enlargement of
the facilities at Kennedy Inter
national Airport to handle the
huge traffic.
Mr. Cohen said that the Blue
Terminal will be restructured .
and enlarged at a cost around
$3,000,000.
The new space will include
a r e a formerly occupied by
Icelandic Airlines and doubtless
ly will include many additional
features. Probably the VIP
lounge, hitherto known as the
“King David” Lounge will be
enlarged as well.
Travelers to Israel on El Al
are often confused by flight
check-in instructions which call
for either the Blue Terminal or
the Orange Terminal. The new
plans do not call for any consol-
i d a t i o n and ostensibly the
Orange Terminal will remain at
its current location, without any
alterations for the time being.
* Mr. Cohen and his associate
Baruch Lilo are currently visit
ing all sixteen El Al offices on
the two American continents.
Their Atlanta stop was the first
on an evaluating itinerary which
will take them two months to
complete. Mr. Lilo is American
sales manager.
At each stop, they will confer
with El Al’s staff and with local
and regional leaders about the
services tho airlines offers and
the reception of the headquart-
tors on the person-to-person
level.
In Atlanta, they were guests
at a cocktail party given in
their honor by Yeheskel Genkin,
who has headed the El Al office
since its inception. They also
