ECliMANIA
By Rabbi Samuel M. Silver
The new wave of interreligi-
ou.s amity, propelled by the late
Pope John, has resulted in the
creation of a new spate of jokes.
It is true that
interfaith activ
ities existed be
fore Pope John,
and it is also
true that the
bond between I
Christians and
Jews has become
weaker because
of the failure
of many Chris
tians to understand the Jewish
concern over the fate of the
State of Israel.
But it is also true that the
relations between Chrstians and
Jews have become easier since
the impetus given understand
ing by the unforgettable Pope
John.
The light-hearted touch has
produced a paperback volume
called “Bcumania.” Edited by
Hiley H. Ward, the religion edi
tor of the Detroit Free Press
and published by Association
Press, the paperback tells about
a bar at St. Peter’s in Rome
known as the Bar Mitzvah.
It tells about the rabbi who
asked the minister whether he
really believes all those mira
cles in the New Testament.
Asked about those in the Jew
ish Bible, the rabbi replies:
“Don’t you know the difference
between fact and fiction?”
When a bride tells her spouse
she’s anemic, he says: "That’s
o.k. You go to your church and
I’ll go to mine.”
Told that Jesus was a Jew,
the Christian grandmother re
plies, “Yes, but God is still a
Presbyterian.”
The book is chockful of
chuckles and contains forewords
by Danny Thomas, Myron
Cohen and Godfrey Cambridge.
You can get it from your book
store or from the National
Council of the YMCA’s, 291
Broadway, New York City,
N. Y. 10007.
Vatican May
Nod to Israel
BUENOS AIRES (JTA) — A
visiting French Cardinal told
leaders of Argentine Jewry that
there are no basic objections to
the recognition of Israel by the
Vatican, only accidental obstac
les arising from the Middle East
situation and the situation of
Christian communities in the
Arab states.
Jean Cardinal Deanielou of
France, advisor to Pope Paul
VI, made those remarks during
a visit to the DAIA, the central
representative body of Argen
tine Jewry.

QUESTION: Why do many in
sist that a synagogue have win
dows?
ANSWER: This is traced to a
passage in the Talmud (Bera-
kot 34:B) where it was stated
that a man should only pray in
a room that has windows. The
Talmud traces this in a passage

where it is written “His Win
dows Were Open in His Upper
Chambers Towards Jerusalem.”
Many have explained this re
quirement to be a means of in
dicating to the worshipper that
prayer should, by no means,
withdraw a person from being
concerned with the world. In
praying, a man should show
concern for the world and his
fellow man. His prayers should
not be selfishly aimed and
limited to his own needs, but
rather to the needs of humanity,
his own included.
This is why the prayers are
recited in the first person plural
instead of the singular. Some
explained that the windows
should be opened towards Jer
usalem so that the prayers of
all Jews are centered on a com
mon goal and destination which
is focused on the Holy City of
Jerusalem.
QUESTION: Why is it that
in Hasidic synagogues there is
a great deal of singing in the
course of the prayer service?
ANSWER: Some advance the
reason that the Hasidic founders
tried to make prayer intelligi
ble to (-very worshipper—even
those who did not possess an
education enabling them to un
derstand, or even read too well,
the words of the prayers. The
melody which was often repeat
ed a number of times, helped
carry their spirits so that all
could join in even if they did
not know the words or the
meaning of the jvords. The mel
odies also gave the prayers a
spark of spontaneity which
made the active prayer more
stimulating. Sometimes a new
melody gave the prayer a new
meaning and a refreshing spirit
so that everyone could enjoy it
and be inspired.
Goldman Predicts
USSR Flow
Will Diminish
JERUSALEM (JTA) — Dr.
Nahum Goldmann warned here
that action should l>e taken
against the danger that Jewish
emigration from the Soviet
Union will be halted once the
most vocal Jewish groups
and individuals have depart
ed from that country. He
said he believed the number of
Jewish immigrants from the
USSR will be numbered in the
tens of thousands rather than in
the hundreds of thousands.
His remarks on Jewish emi
gration from Russia, made at a
press conference, were similar to
those he made before the Board
of Deputies of British Jews in
London last December. As a re
sult of his remarks then, the
World Zionist Organization Exe
cutive cancelled his address to
the 28th World Zionist Congress.
Dr. Goldmann was accused at
the time of playing down the
primacy of aliya when he said
that a majority of Jews will re
main in the Soviet Union and
that efforts must be made to
protect their religious and cul
tural rights in the Soviet society.
