Writer Finds “Yiddishkeit”
At Scattered Wedding Ceremonies
By Eve Silver
How “Yiddishkeit” survives
the ravages of time and perse
cution became clear to me when
I recently attended weddings in
San Juan, Argentina and St.
Louis, Missouri.
There, the children of cousins

who survived the holocaust, were
getting married. St. Louis, Mo.,
and San Juan, Argentina, have
very little in common with
Tarnogrod Poland, the stetl
where my cousins grew up. But
that brand of Yiddish k e i t
known to the readers of I. B.
Singer was evident there end 1
its pungent flavor added “tarn”
to the life of La Paz, Bolivia
where I visited my third
cousin.
When I. B. Singer’s grand
father was the “rebbe” of Bil-
goray, my grandfather Shmelke
Tayer was a rich merchant and
“pater familias” of five sons
and four daughters, who knew
no permissiveness where their
talmudic education was concern
ed. They attended the “cheder”
and yeshiva and those who sur
vived the holocaust carried that
knowledge to wherever in the
world they settled
Bilgoray, Josefow, Zamoszcz,
Tarnogrod, the places of which
I. B. Singer writes so well, are
no more for all practical Jewish
purposes, but the learning and
and customs live.
In St. Louis, Shmuel Kohn,
a great-grandson and namesake
of Shmelke Tayer, married di
minutive cameo-faced Meryle
Harriet Cherrick, a third gen
eration Missourian, whose fam
ily cherishes its Jewish heri
tage.
Simchot or Shabbos meals at
the homes of the Cherrick fam
ilies in St. Louis were rich in
Talmudic wisdom and chant.
The Kohn and Cherrick fam
ilies, different in many respects,
found a common bond in devo
tion to Jewishness.
Joy was infectious as the
young Talmudic zealots attend
ing the wedding displayed their
old time religion while ac
companying the groom for the
“beddeckung,” lifted the bride
and groom separately and to
gether in chairs and danced,
danced . . . danced. Nureyev
quality leaps were performed
in groups and solos to the chant
of traditional chassidic mel
odies.
Rob Zusia, the groom’s uncle
from Kfar Chabad, Israel, a
figure as if straight out of ah
Eli Wiesel novel, arrived fresh
ly inspired by a meeting with
the Lubavitcher rebbe, Zelman
Schnerson of New York.

liked good food—and good eating. So come again
and enjoy, enjoy.
He’s available too for the superlative catering of
weddings, banquets and those special occasions for

The bride and groom, both

in the gentile world and observe
their strict customs and their
talmudic learning vigorously.
The groom recei v e d his

“I want to be known for
what I am and not for what I
do,” Shmuel Kohn said, referr

Jew first and a mathematician
next.” The Tora remains solid

“Torah is Tachlis” was the
summation of one of the young
talmudic scholars, which seemed
to finalize all the wisdom and
learning heard during the
simeha.
