40 YEARS AGO: 1932
Fire destroyed the entire Jewish village of Lespezi, Rumania;
the synagogue was leveled, but the scrolls were saved.
Canada barred anti-Semitic publications from the mails.
“BERLIN — Ringing the doorbells of Jewish physicians, asking
them to come to treat patients and knocking the physicians down
en route is the latest method employed by Hitlerites for attacking
Jews.’’
Thelma Nurenberg wrote in “This New Red Freedom”: “During
the religious persecutions which startled the world in 1930, the JTA
through its able correspondent, Boris Smolar, released . . . informa
tion concerning the priests and the rabbis under trial (in Russia).
During this period of reporting, Mr. Smolar was not the most pop
ular foreign correspondent in the Soviet Union.”
10 YEARS AGO: 1962
Sen. Ker.r .-th B. Keating (R.N.Y.), charging the Kennedy admin
istration of currying Arab favor, warned: “Economically and politi
cally, we may be beginning to take Israel for granted.” Max
Bressler and Rabbi Max Nussbaum, leaders of the Zionist Organi
zation of America, flailed the State Dept, for a “massive program
of appeasing the Arab states at the expense of Israel.”
“NEW YORK — Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the World
Zionist Congress, called upon all Zionist organizations in the US to
merge into one overall united Zionist movement ... as an essential
step to restoring the Zionist movement in the US to its former
position of eminence as an action body and molder of American
Jewish public opinion.”

Salzburg Sunday
By Jimmy Wisch
SALZBURG (AJPA)—Dr. Henry Kissinger in a back
ground briefing early Sunday morning, May 21, in answer
to a question by this writer concerning the 1,250,000 petitions
which President Nixon has received from the American Jew
ish Community asking him to plead for better treatment
of Soviet Jewish citizens by the father was Jewish but he was
USSR during the summit, said
that the President was aware
of the petitions and would look
for an opportunity to present
this.
While Dr. Kissinger was
speaking to the press a small
demonstration of students chant
ed their support of North Viet
nam and the Viet Cong in front
of the Congress Hall Press head
quarters. This appeared to be a
pontinuation of the same stu
dent factions who demonstrated
at the airport when the Presi
dent’s plane arrived in the even
ing and who paraded in down
town- Salzburg near midnight
Saturday.
The Soviet propaganda min
istry may have missed an op
portunity to impress part of the
contingent of American journ
alists who are expected to ar
rive in the USSR in advance of
the President’s party. On the
flight from the U. S. one plane
was flooded with issues of “So
viet Life” which carried stories
of Jewish content featuring the
good and positive aspects of
Jewish living in the Soviet
Union with one story making
especial reference to the admira
tion of Sholem Alechim by the
Soviet Union. No mention was
made about the hard facts of
Jewish life in the USSR. How
ever, another plane which car
ried a greater contingent of
writers, was completely miss
ed.
While Chancellor of Austria
and Mrs. Kreisky were meeting
President Nixon at Schloss
Klessheim and during the time
President Nixon spent in private
talks with the Chancellor, his
son Dr. Peter Kreisky, 28, of
Vienna where he just completed
his studies in political science,
was having his own talks with
American newsmen in front of
the Kongresshaus Press Center
where some of the students tore
down the American flag twice.
Peter made references to “the
Military-Industrial Complex that
is running the United States”
and held the attention of a
crowd of onlookers. He spoke
about American imperialism and
decried the U. S. participation in
the war castigating the United
States.
He was questioned in detail by
thus reporter about the the ef
fects of Soviet Anti-Semitism
against their Jewish citizens
and was specifically asked if the
same “Student Democrats,” who
he led in the protest movement
from Vienna and other sur
rounding communities, ever had
any protest movements against
the Soviet Union or any of the
Arab countries for their treat
ment of their Jewish citizens.
He could not give any single
date when this was done, nor
could any of his fellowers,
though they said they were
against Soviet oppression of all
religions and minorities.
They had reservations about
the Arab question though Peter
Kreisky had visited Israel.
Kreisky admitted to a “Jew
ish background” and said his

not sure about his mother.
“They don’t practice it.”
He did not know what Bar
Mitzva was and said he had
never had any formal religious
training and had not read any
Jewish books or religious ma
terial because most of modern
Judaism was based, he said, on
Jewish opposition to Catholic
Anti-Semitism during the last
500 years.
Kreisky came to Austria
from Stockholm in 1951. The
Chancellor had sought refuge in
Sweden during World War II.
Continuing his interview as we
walked along Salzburg’s sunny
streets, with a group of his fol
lowers he finally admitted that
President Nixon’s specific invi
tation to Jewish journalists who
are accompanying him to the
Soviet Union “was a symbolic
and good thing” although earlier
he had pronounced it as a “Fas-
cistic” device.
“Shalom” we said as he ran
to catch a bus. He wrinkled his
brow. “You understand that
means ‘Peace’.” Yes, I know
that word, he waved. “It is the
best of your Jewish traditions.”
