Big Lobby for Big Families
HAIFA—If there is discrimin
ation of any kind in Israel, it
is discrimination against fami
lies with 'many children. Thus
maintains a new organization
which has just been established
here to promote the interests,
rights and privileges of larger
families.
This is not a question of
Sephardi or Ashkenazi differ
ence. It is a matter of simple
arithmetic, they say. There is
no justification for the fact that
a family with ten children, if
it wants to keep the youngsters
and their clothing clean, has to
pay four times more for its
water bill than a family with
only two children. As a general
rule the large family is less
able to pay the extra costs, not
only for water but also for
taxes on the washing machine,
the refrigerator, electricity, etc.
Ten percent of Israel’s fam
ilies rear 40% of the nation's
children. There are 100,000 fam
ilies with four or more children,
and they have now organized
to exercise their influence in the
political arena.
They feel that while the gov
ernment is always ready to ap
plaud the virtue of the large
family, which is contributing to
the national welfare, it is not
so quick to provide tangible en
couragement or assistance.
Everyone favors immigration,
they say, to help make the
country strong and prosperous,
and everyone is asked to con
tribute to the limit to meet the
costs. Yet for a far smaller ex
penditure we can increase the

population with people who do

Israel spends on keeping immi

on providing education for local
children, housing for big fam

prolific mothers, we would
build a stronger and happier
country. Furthermore, the

this would then be a country

The new organization, which
calls itself the Hebrew equiva
lent of PROFF (Privileges and
Rights of Fruitful Families)
does not ask for charity or
handouts. It maintains that the
large family is performing a
national service and is therefore
entitled to special aid and assist
ance. Such aid can take the
form of subsidized education,
cultural and social privileges,
discounts on public transporta
tion. tax reductions, large apart-
m e n t s , etc. The government
should see to it that the mother
of a large family should get a
paid, restful vacation and social
security benefits no less than a
working woman.
To achieve their end the lead
ers of PROFF are beginning a
campaign to change the public
image of the big family. It
should not be a subject of joke
or ridicule. Parents of many
children should have special
status and prestige. They should
be given national honor.
And so, while most other
countries of the world are con
cerned with the population ex
plosion, and talk about “family
planning”, the Israelis are
launching a great national cam
paign to encourage what has
long been known in Zionist his
tory as internal immigration.
