ANSWER: As the Torah is
removed from the ark and car
ried around the congregation
and to the platform from which
it is read, Jewish tradition was
desirous that the worshippers
be aware of its approaching
presence so that they might rise
and give due respect to this
venerable object. While in a
large congregation the move
ment of the Torah through the
aisles may not be easily visible,
the tinkling of the bells while
the scroll is carried would suf
fice to make all aware of its
presence.
Some relate this practice to
the Biblical requirement for
bells to be attached to garments
of the High Priest who entered
the Holy of Holies once a year
on the Day of Atonement. Since
no one could go along with him,
some symbol was necessary to
keep the populace outside of
the Holy of Holies aware of his
activities. Should he have failed
in his duties, death might have
occurred. The tinkling of the bells
while the High Priest moved to
and fro during his duties in the
Holy of Holies kept the people
aware of his presence, which in
this sense was both remote and
yet perceptible.

Terrorist Hunted
ASHKELON (JTA) — A 19-
year-old terrorist, who had been
sentenced to life imprisonment
for murdering another Arab in
the Gaza Strip and for sabotage
acts, escaped May 10 from Ash-
kelon’s top-security prison.
Ahmed Shihada Amran was
working in the prison kitchen
when a bread van arrived. The
youth entered the van and an
accomplice covered him with a
blanket and loaves of bread,
officials said. The van then de
parted for the Gaza prison, and
en route, the terrorist escaped.
Security forces began an imme
diate hunt for him.
