THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE
Solidarity Day for Soviet Jewry, at which petitions with over
5,000 signatures were gathered for forwarding to President Nixon
before hLs Moscow trip, was sparked by the above. Gordon Sugar-
man, chairman, Atlanta Jewish Welfare Federation Committee
on Soviet Jewry; Pavel Fel, Russian Emigree and Brig. Gen.
Amos Horev, Chief of Israeli Quartermaster Corps, both of whom
addressed the gathering; and Larry M. Frank, a member of the
executive committee of the National Conference on Soviet Jewry.
Captain Cohen Coordinated
Local Army Reserve Project
April as Community Month for
the Army Reserves, and the
3297th unit carried out several
community projects recently.
Project Officer for the unit is
Captain Leonard L. Cohen, in
civilian life director of social
services for the Jewish Family
and Children’s Bureau. Under
his direction, three volunteer
groups of reservists participated
in three separate projects.
One group donated 20 pints of
blood at the Atlanta Red Cross
Blood Center. A second group
spent an afternoon painting the
interior of the Georgia Narcot
ics Treatment Program’s Intake
Center. Still another group gave
their time to clean and ready
the swimming pool at Hillside
Cottages, children’s residential
treatment center.
Soviet Aclivisls
Warned lo Silence
LONDON (JTA) — Vladimir
Slepak, Soviet Jewish activist,
was summoned to police head
quarters in Moscow May 17 and
warned he must keep quiet dur
ing the visit of President Nixon,
Jewish sources in the Soviet
Union reported. The police wan
ted him to sign an agreement
but he refused. Two persons
were called in to witness that
Slepak had been warned.
The 3297th U. ,S. Army Hos
pital, a 1000 bed Reserve Unit,
meets for weekend drills at
Third Army Headquarters in
Atlanta.
Reflecting the Army’s con
tinued concern about its image,
often marred by misunderstand
ings and other communal atti
tudes, and its efforts to dispel
misconceptions, the military is
becoming more involved in local
community activities.
