The sources referred to the
declaration by 16 members of
the House of Representatives
that they might vote against
VOA appropriations if it contin
ued to refuse to inaugurate Yid
dish broadcasts. The no-Yiddish
statement was attributed to Jew
ish sources in the Soviet Union
hut did not identify those sour
ces or indicate whether they re
presented the views of any sub
stantial segment of Soviet Jews.
The statement said: “We
deeply appreciate the senti
ments behind the intervention
of Mr. (Rep. Edward I.) Koch
and his friends. But he should
realize that it is Hebrew we are
studying and not Yiddish. Yid
dish belongs to the past. Those
of us who intend to go to Israel,
and also many who don’t intend
to go as yet, consider Hebrew
the language of the Jewish peo
ple as well as of the Jewish
State and of the Torah. We have
a Yiddish monthly in Moscow
and we ignore it because it rep
resents a Jewish dew which is
sponsored by the authorities and
totally unacceptable to us.”
The monthly referred to ap
parently is Sovietish Heimland,
edited by Aron Vergelis.
