THE SOUTHERN ISRAELITE
JEWS IN SPORTS .... By Haskell Cohen
Yankees Fxpect Itig Things
From Atlanta’s Bloniherg
No matter how much soccer I
watch, I will never understand
the various ramifications in
volved in determining whether
a soccerite is a pro or an ama
teur. The latest deal to confuse
this corner is one whereby Mor-
dechai Spiegler, Israel’s sup-
preme wing—half has signed a
contract to play with the West
Ham (you should excuse the
expression) 11 of England. West
Ham is one of the foremost soc
cer teams in the world, but is
taking Spiegler on as an ama
teur.
Spiegler will perform next
year with the, English 11 with
the hope and expectation that
he will learn enough soccer so
that he can return to Israel as a
qualified coach. Envisioning the
time when his playing days will
come to an end, Moiv.ivh.r. :<

his country’s young footballers.

Despite the fact that Jews in
professional sports are running
at an all time low, major league
baseball has had a revival and
there are no less than seven
Sons of David performing on
different clubs. Oakland is a
proud possessor of two well
publicized players in‘first base
man-outfielder, Mike Epstein,
who is batting fifth in the bat
ting order. He was joined this
year by Ken Holtzman, who had
jus difficulties with Leo Duro-

be traded. Since joining the

The New York Yankees, who
have never had a real star Jetv-
ish player, although Jimmy
Kresr was up long enough to
have more than a cup of coffee
with them years ago, is looking
for big things from Ron Blom-
lantan who, after a star minor
lantian who, after a star minor
league tenure, joined the Yank
ees late last year and started to
show hitting power. He started
in fine shape this season, but
came up witli a groin pull which
benched him for 10 days. Now
that he is back in the line-up
and has started again, manager
Ilouk, inserts him only against
right handed pitchers. Blomberg
prides himself on the faet that
tie is a member of the New
York B’nai B’rith Sports Lodge.
Possessor of a thick, rich South
ern accent, Ron had difficulty
getting dates with Jewish girls
when he was serving his ap
prenticeship in Syracuse. He
went out with one pretty young
lass and he convinced her of
his Jewishness only after recit
ing the Hebrew blessing over
wine. These two people are now
happily married and living in
Riverdale, N.Y.

W us Jarring 1 Pro-]\asi
1 nti-Semite In His Youth?
By DAVID HOROWITZ
UNITED NATIONS (WUP)
—The rumor to the effect that
Dr. Gunnar Jarring, when he
was 29 years of age, belonged
to a pro-Nazi Swedish party
and that he made state
ments bordering on anti-Sem
itism was raised again at a UN
press briefing recently when an
Israeli radio correspondent read
out a further statement taken

f.f May 9.
That statement, by-lined Lars
Svedgard, was captioned “Jar
ring who was Parliament Can
didate for a Pro-Nazi Party De
manded Sweden’s Withdrawal
from League of Nations” It con
tained the following, among
other things:
“In 1936 Jarring contributed
to the paper ‘National Christmas’
with an article about Kashmir.
'Those who live in Srinagar and
mainly support themselves by
commerce are considered to be
the most cheating and cunning
people in the world’, Jarring,
future mediator in Kashmir,
wrote among other things. ‘In
the Orient they are considered
widely to surpass both Jew,
Armenian and Greek in the art
of cheating your neighbor’.”
Whether Dr. Jarring actually
said this must still be proved.
Your correspondent, who had
had some correspondence with
the Swedish diplomt in the past,
plans to write to him again and
ask for a statement on these
charges—for publication.
The Ajtenbladet article goes on
to quote Dr. Jarring as follows:
" 'It must be considered lucky
lor us that also better people live
in Kashmir . . . because in Kash
mir thi> true Aryan still lives with
all the characteristics of his race
and many Kashmiris are so
handsome people that they could
he demonstrated in any raoe-in-
rtitLite in our southern neighbor
ing country . . . ’ ”
The Party for which Jarring
was a candidate for Parliament
m 1936 published as platform

Lars Svedgard concludes hi:;
article in the Afh’nbtndet with

“After the New Year of 1938-

no longer appear in these con

Nationale Tidning. He left the
so-called National to start a

Political campaigns often dig
up all sort of stories about can

Wo shall await Dr. Jarring’s
own statement on the above

Kichie Scheinbaum has come

All in all, this is a rather
heavily studded east of Jewish
baseball players who have made
it at the same time in the
majors.
Most Jewish athletes today
like to continue their education
and once a boy goes to college,
it is extremely difficult for him
to make the majors since it
takes quite a bit of seasoning in
the minors in the formative
years, 17-21. Seven major league
Jewish starters at one time is
quite a large number at this
stage in our sports history.
