Responding to the compelling
needs for immediate cash, and
citing the requirement of a min
imum of one million dollars a
day to keep the humanitarian
relief machinery moving, Sid
ney Feldman, genera! chairman
of the Atlanta Jewish Welfare
Federation’s 1972 campaign and
Meyer Balser, chairman of the
current cash collection effort,
have issued the following state
ment:
“Pledges alone will not meet
the pressing needs of immigra
tion and absorption. Cash is
urgently needed now because
payment for all costs involved
must be made instantly.
“Pledges will not pay for
visas or for transportation from
point of origin to Israel. Pledges
will not pay for housing or ul-
panim or food and clothing.
Pledges will not pay for vital
health, welfare and education
services.
’’The threat to the security of
the people of Israel continues,
.as does the need of the people
of Israel to rely on free-world
Jewry, particularly American
Jewry, for assistance in vital
humanitarian relief. A massive
and immediate transmittal of
funds—a minimum of one mil
lion dollars a day—is needed.
“FACT: 70,000 immigrants
will come to Israel this year—
20,000 more than originally an
ticipated.
“FACT: From January to
May, 1972, more than 10,255
Soviet Jews have immigrated
to Israel. And a total of 30,000
for 1972 is expected, as com
pared with 13,000 for 1971.
