Church, Synagogue Women
Unite for Social Action
NEW YORK (JTA) — A Con
ference of Church and Syna
gogue Women is planning a two
pronged program to enable
“millions” of American women
“to translate their religious ideal
ism into practical action” to
deal with “the current threaten
ing challenges to western civil
ization,” a spokesman for the
interfaith group said.
The conference, which held
its spring conference at the
office of the, National Women’s
League of the (Conservative)
United Synagogue of America,
was described as a movement by
which Catholic, Protestant and
Orthodox Christian women
mobilize their common goals
and action through Church
Women United.
It also represents the (Re
form) National Federation of
Temple Sisterhoods, the Wom
en’s Branch of the Union of
Orthodox Jewish Congregations
of America, and the National
Women’s League.
The spokesman said the two-
part effort will seek to organ
ize the concerted powbr of the
millions of members “in the
struggle to achieve freedom as
well as responsible social order
in a global society, for the ben
efit of all people.”
The first action will be circu
lation of a letter to the various
constituencies of the Christian
and Jewish women’s groups pro
posing the initiation of dia
logues on social action issues.

ADL Lauds Baptists
For Stand Against
Anti-Semitism
NEW YORK (WUP) — The
Anti-Defamation League of
B’nai B’rith has hailed the
adoption by Southern Baptists
of a resolution opposing “any
and all forms of anti-Semitism”
as “another milestone in Chris-
tian-Jewish relations.”
The resolution, adopted ear
lier this month at the Southern
Baptist Convention in Philadel
phia, cited anti-Semitism as “a
serious problem for the church
throughout most of Christian
history” and as an “unchristian
attitude” which has “led to
brutal persecutions of the Jews
in numerous countries and soci
eties.”
Rabbi Solomon Bernards, di
rector of the League’s Inter
religious Cooperation depart
ment, commended the state
ment as a “forthright, courag
eous and constructive act of
affirmation and principle which
will go far in building new
models of cooperation between
the Southern Baptist and Jewish
communities.”
The resolution charges that
“latent anti-Semitism lies bare
ly under the surface of many
Western, Christian cultures to
day and many Christian com
munions and denominations, in
cluding our own, have failed to
take a sufficiently vigorous
stand against anti-Semitism . . .”
The Convention’s 13,000 ‘mes
sengers’ pledged themselves to
“combat anti-Semitism in every
honorable, Christian way.”
RABAT (JTA)—King Hassan
of Morocco, speaking as presi
dent of the Organization of
African Unity in session here,
appeared to be seeking to soften
the impact of the strongest anti-
Israel resolution in OAU his
tory. The 34 African chiefs of
state approved by acclamation
a pledge of “Africa’s full soli
darity with Egypt in its legiti
mate fight to liberate its terri
tory by all possible means.”
