QUESTION: What Ls the de
rivation of the expression “Na
turei Karta?”
ANSWER: The expres s i o n
“Naturei Karta," which is used
in contemporary times to refer
to the (.'xtremely religious sect
in Jerusalem, has its origin in
the Talmud (Jerushalmi, Cha-
gigah 1:7). There it is referred
to as a name for scholars
(scribes). Rabbi Judah once
came to a city and found no
scholar (or scribe). He asked
for the “watchmen of the city"
(Naturei Karta). When they
brought him the gatekeepers, he
said these do not preserve the
city. They destroy it. When he
was asked who the “watchmen
of the city” are, he answered
“the scholars” who preserve its
culture. This extremely religi
ous sect thus adopted this name,
considering themsel v e s the
"watchmen of the community,”
because they feel that they are
guarding the city against the
encroachment of secularism and
impiety.

QUESTION: What is meant
by “Shabbos Chazak,”
ANSWER: “Shabbos Chazak”
is the name given to the Sab
bath on which one of the Five
Books of Moses is completed in
the course of the Torah read
ing for that Sababth. The name
comes from the expression used
by the congregation when the
last sentence of the book is
read. The congregation exclaims
“Chazak, Chazak veNischazek”
(Be strengthened, Be strength
ened and let us be strengthen
ed) at such an occasion. Ac
tually in many parts of France
and Provence the congregations
would wish each person who
completes the reading of any
portion or who has a portion
of the Torah read for him
“Chazak” (Be strengthened.) In
Sephardic congregations even
today each worshipper is greet
ed by the expression “Chazak-
Baruch” (Be strengthened and
blessed) after he retires from
having been called to the Torah
for a reading of a portion. Some
claim that this practice comes
from a contention that the
study of Torah weakens the
strength of the individual in a
physical sense because of the in
tensity of study involved. Thus,
when one has appeared before
the Torah to have a portion
read for him, he is wished
“strength” to continue his in
volvement with the Torah. Some
claim that the study of Torah
sometimes involved a risk, es
pecially during days of persecu
tion. Wishing one strength in
dicated the support of the com
munity for the study of Torah
even when a peril was involved.
