GENE SAKS who directed
“Last of the Red Hot Lovers,”
previously has been behind the
camera guiding two other Neil
Simon screen adaptations,
‘Barefoot in the Park” and “The
Odd Couple.” In the Tyrone
Guthrie production of Paddy
Chayevsky’s “The Tenth Man,”
Gene Saks essayed the part of
the reformed rabbi on Broad
way.
Saks is a product of Piscator’s
Dramatic Workshop of the
New School for Social Research
with such fellow students as
Harry Belafonte, Walter Matt
hau and Nehemiah Persoff. In
1950, the young actor toured
with Henry Fonda in “Mister
Roberts.” Five years later, Gene
Saks directed Fonda in “Gener
ation” and more recently Jane
Fonda in “Barefoot in the
Park.” He guided the stage
production of “Enter Laugh
ing” and “How the Other Half
Lives,” the latter with Phil Sil
vers and Sandy Dennis, and
appeared earlier still on Broad
way in “A Shot in the Dark”
and “A Thousand Clowns.’

“O Jerusalem,” the semi-doc-
- umentary film to bo produced
by the Frenchman Claude
Berri (of “Mazeltoff”), is ba^ed
on the book by two journalists,
the American UPI man Larry
Collins and Paris-Match corre
spondent Dominique Lappierre
who also wrote the brilliant re
portage of “Is Paris Burning”
which became a miserable mot
ion picture partly due to its
star-studded cast. The new epic
will be shot in realistic fashion
in Israel, with Costa-Gavras,
Oscar winner for “Z,” directing.
The work deals with the war
of independence fought in the
Holy City of Jerusalem in 1948.
“O Jerusalem” will be photo
graphed by Paramount in color
and 70mm using Israeli crews
and technicians. The price tag
is $3,000,000.
