Encore uses a format similar
to Time and Newsweek. Accord
ing to Mrs. Lewis, it is an inter
national Black magazine that
includes viewpoints of other
ethnic groups and seeks to pro
mote readership outside the
Black community. She said it
hoped to unite the ethnic com
munity by highlighting its com
mon interests as well as prob
lems.
Upcoming articles on Jewish
subjects include a profile of
Russian activist Boris Kochu-
biyevsky and a series on Juda
ism and the Women’s Liberation
Movement.

JEWISH QUIZ SOX
By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX
QUESTION: Why do some
people kiss the Tzitzit of the
Tallth when reciting a certain
portion of the “Shema?”
ANSWER: Rabbi Moses Isser-
les explains that this is done to
exhibit one’s “love” for the
Mitzva. The worshipper thus
indicates that he observes the
commandment of wearing the
fringes called Tzitzit because
he loves to obey God’s com
mandments. The same is true
for other symbols like the
Tfilin and the Mezuzah which
the Jew also treats in this way.
Rabbi Joseph Karo mentioned
that some people make it their
business to look upon the
Tzitzit because the Bible
states “and you shall see them”
when speaking about the Tzit
zit. This is an expression of
the fact that one is concentrat
ing on them because he finds it
desirable to obey the command
of the Almighty. This adds a
dimension of interest and love
to the performance of the duties
of a Jew.
QUESTION: Why is it that
the 31st proverb is chanted in
the home on Friday night be
fore the recital of Kiddush?
ANSWER: This is the chapter
in Proverbs where Solomon ex
tols the virtue of the “Woman

of Valor.” Some contend that
this is used in the home to extol
the virtue of the housewife who
prepared the Sabbath in the
home. This lends the spirit of
love and peace in the home
which is the proper atmosphere
for the Sabbath. Others claim
that King Solomon’s "Woman
of Valor’ was really the mani
festation of the divine presence
often called the “Shechinah,” a
feminine noun indicating the
dwelling of the divine presence.
According to the Kabbalists who
advanced this theory, one might
very well be welcoming the di
vine presence of the Almighty
into his home, which on the
Sabbath is permeated with the
feeling of God’s nearness. Thus,
a special spirit prevails in the
Jewish home on the Sabbath.
This would match the contention
of the mystics who claim that
angels accompany every man
on his way home from the syn
agogue to his Sabbath table.
