The Political Tsimmes
heard that after every hroad-
crata there and Go Ida wotild be
there to welcome them and
they have such wonderful
kugel!
The holding of the major
party conventions this year in
Miami Beach begins perhaps a
new epoch in American history.
The reason for this is to be
found in one fact which is gen
erally overlooked.
Miami Beach has a very large
Jewish population. That in it
self is not important. The Dem
ocrats met four years ago in
Chicago and that city has more
Jews than Miami Beach. Con
ventions have been held in
New York with its even larger
Jewish population. The differ
ence lies in the fact that almost
without exception, the restau
rants in Miami Beach have the
Jewish cuisine. This is true of
the restaurants of the luxurious
hotels as well as of the mul
titude of cheaper eating places.
Imagine how a delegate from
Iowa will feel after eating a
plate of latkes. His whole point
of view will change.
Maybe we are making too
much of a tsimmes of it, but
we don’t think we are. Food
has always played an important
part in history. Columbus look
ing for pepper discovered Amer
ica. The Jews looking for free
dom discovered matzos. It is
thought that the Pilgrims came
to Massachusetts because they
wanted to visit the Kennedys
or to be near Boston, but his
torians tell us that originally
they had intended to go to Vir
ginia, but that beer gave out
on the voyage, so they stopp
ed off at Plymouth Rock, where
with the help of the Indian
maize they refreshed their sup
plies of that drink.
And what was to give New
England its special flavor? The
answer is, the Pilgrims found
the pumpkin growing wildly
in Massachusetts, so they made
pumpkin pie. And then what
happened? Sam Adams ate a
piece of pumpkin pie and felt
very good. "Down with the
King,” he said, “Taxation with
out representation is tyranny.”
Paul Revere took a piece of
pumpkin pie and jumped on a
horse. Anyone eating a piece
of pumpkin pie will jump on
a horse.
Heine spoke of “bauch Ju-
den,” Jeys whose links to Ju
daism are confined to the stom
ach. There were many apostate
Jews in his day who would
come sneaking back to the
ghetto for Jewish food. In spite
of all their efforts to get away
from Jewish life, they were
hooked. They suffered terrible
withdrawal pains. They had to
have their latkes.
Why do we eat latkes on
Hanuka and blintzes on Shav-
uot? Not enough research has
gone into these questions. One
noted rabbi said blintzes are a
dairy food, the food of children
and since on Shavuot, the time
of the giving of the Torah, we
become like children again, so
we eat blintzes.
So we may expect the dele
gates, full of blintzes, to act
sometimes like children. This
may make them a little unruly
at times, as children are apt
to be, but on the whole it is a
good thing. It is a sign of over-
bubbling life.
On the other hand, if the
delegates are full of tsimmes,
we may have some political
tsimmes ensuing.
Jewish food is tasty but after
a Jewish meal, one is never
violent. A Jewish meal rather
contributes to a balanced, re
flective but tasty and progres
sive point of view. For long, the
fresh, bright and liberal point
of view of Dick Cavett aston
ished us. Then one day, we
cast he has a dish of borscht
and sour cream. That explained
it. Anyone who eats borscht and
sour cream is liberal and
witty.
Now that the Democrats have
met in Miami Beach, why not
hold the next convention in Tel
Aviv, There are many Demo-
